Lee Moore Funeral Arrangements
Lee Moore, mother of Betsy Bedwell, Grace's Director of Children's Ministry, sister of church pillar Jean Whisenant, teacher and long-time active area Episcopalian died last week. Services have been scheduled for noon on Saturday, May 28, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Pine Street, preceded by visitation at 10:00 a.m.

Please keep Betsy, Jean, and all their family in your prayers.

Her obituary from The Chattanoogan is duplicated below:

"The family of Merry Lee Whisenant Moore is saddened to announce her death in Chattanooga, on May 20, 2022, following her second battle with cancer.

"Lee was born in Fort Oglethorpe, and attended East Lake Elementary School, City High, and Tennessee Wesleyan University. She was an admissions officer at both St. Nicholas School and Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences. She was a master teacher and taught reading, science, and Bible at Hickory Valley Christian School for 15 years. She mentored many new teachers, carrying on her love of learning, passion for teaching, and enthusiasm for the formation of the whole child. She was a greeter at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and enjoyed cooking, birdwatching, and writing letters. Her grandchildren, Merry Calloway, Margaret, George, and Josephine were her greatest joy.

"Lee is survived by her husband, Larry, sisters, Jean Whisenant and Sue Cope (Leon) and children, Elizabeth Bedwell (Eric), Samuel Moore (Katie), and Merry Madeline Bishop (David).

"A service celebrating Lee’s life will be held at noon on May 28, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Chattanooga, with the family receiving friends at 10 a.m.

"In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Hickory Valley Christian School."
Pentecost Readers
Pentecost Sunday celebrates the Holy Spirit's gale-like visitation to humanity and the sudden ability of all to understand the spoken languages of every tribe and nation. In commemoration of this radical and doubtless chaotic event, Grace recruits those who can handle a language -- any language -- other than English to join the appointed lector in a multi-lingual reading of the lesson from Acts.
If you are master of an alien tongue and are willing to take part in this chaotic chorus on Pentecost Sunday (June 5), please contact Jim Milburn (jnmilburn@epbfi.com) and sign up to read -- and let him know what language you'll be using and which service you'll be attending (you'd be very welcome at both!)

Worship This Week and Summer Schedule
Services this week will be at 8 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.; masks are currently optional. The 10:45 a.m. service will be streamed via Facebook; those watching from home can access the bulletin HERE.

Beginning Sunday, June 12th and extending through Sunday, August 7th, Grace will celebrate one service of Holy Eucharist on Sunday mornings instead of two. Worship will begin at 10am, with formation activities beginning at 9am.
Holy Conversation on Sunday, June 5 (9:30 a.m.)
Next Sunday, the church celebrates the feast of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended on the church, unleashing the ability to communicate across boundaries. At a time when life in this country is marked by fear, bitterness and anger, our Rector, April Berends, invites the members of this community to join in a Holy Conversation about Difficult Things next Sunday, June 5th at 9:30 in the Undercroft. We will discuss current events in light of our faith commitments, grieve together, and seek the movement of the Spirit.
Snorkel with GreenGrace in June!
Release your inner mermaid!

On July 8th Green Grace is planning a snorkel trip to the Conasauga River with our documentary snorkel expert, Casper Cox! If you recall, we had an environmental stewardship class of the film Hidden Rivers of Southern Appalachia back in the fall. Let's take a field trip now!

When: July 8th 10-2 (with a couple hours of driving)
Where: Cherokee National Forest/ Conasauga River
Who: Anyone interested. We DO need at least 12 folks. We will be snorkeling and meandering over river rocks, so make sure you are comfortable with that.

Things to know:

-Snorkel gear/wet suits will be available for no extra cost
- $25 a person, but will be at least $300 for the group/ aka 12 people
- Carpooling will be a necessity
- Waivers signed and sent in once money is received. Everyone must sign the CNF waivers.

Please contact Brittany Williamson with questions and interest.

We will need to finalize and send in our plans by June 24th.

Food Pantry
The food pantry was a popular place this week: Tuesday brought three visitors to the door, and Wednesday's official session brought 24. These 27 folk left with food for 84 people -- 48 adults and 36 children. Your car's glove compartment may more food in it that the pantry does at this point!

Church staff are taking care of some of our needs via trips to Sam's and Aldi with the funds you have so generously donated to fill some of the gaps; t

hese are the major areas that need beefing, spamming, and souping up in order to be helpful to our next batch of visitors:

  • hearty beef soups (none left)
  • Spam (1 can left)
  • canned tuna (regular cans and small pop-top cans)
  • canned chicken
  • canned hams (2 left)
  • 15 oz. cans of fruit and fruit cups (1 jar of applesauce remains)
  • Pudding cups (supplies low)
  • jars of jelly (small-to-medium jars with flavors that kids like -- with school getting out, peanut butter and jelly will be a good option for families suddenly having to provide lunch for kids at home)

Thanks to volunteers Linda Wideman and Gail Dooley, who took care of the tsunami of patrons this week; to Richard Hyatt for communications and to him and Phaen Stone for the heavy-lifting of collection and transport of Belvoir donations. Special thanks this week to April, Kathryn, and Anderson Barger-Howell, who have undertaken to collect the Belvoir donations while Richard and Phaen are otherwise committed.

Ginormous thanks with chocolate chips, sprinkles and way too much whipped cream (if there is such a thing) to all who make this ministry a weekly part of their community care. Your support has become all the more crucial as inflation has risen and pandemic aid dried up. We are able to help others because so many good folks in the Grace community and the Belvoir neighborhood help us, and we are grateful beyond telling.
