BCPOLIS & Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives

The Case for Water-Use Reporting in Case for Water-Use Reporting in BC

Last week, the new report Counting Every Drop: The Case for Water-Use Reporting in BC was released by the University of Victoria's POLIS Project on Ecological Governance, in partnership with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA).

Authored by Ben Parfitt (POLIS Research Associate and CCPA Policy Analyst), Counting Every Drop argues that the Province of BC should safeguard the public interest by creating a robust, publicly accessible water-use database that covers all withdrawals from surface and groundwater sources by major users. The report provides clear recommendations to set the stage for a robust water-use reporting regime in future years.

Although not highlighted in the report, the BC Water Use Reporting Centre is a good existing pilot project. This voluntary program shows that a province-wide monitoring program is possible, and offers a viable model that could be expanded upon. This online water management and reporting system is an initiative of the Okanagan Basin Water Board, in partnership with the Province of BC and Environment Canada.
