Truth, Goodness and Beauty
Art
Radiating the true essence of the classical period, The School of Athens by Raphael is one of the fundamental pieces of art found in all Great Hearts Academies. At Great Hearts Live Oak, ours is found right behind the front office, facing all of the kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms. It serves as a reminder that like our Greek and Roman forefathers, the birthplace of philosophical thinking is found in our own backyard when we encourage exploration, creativity and wonder, just like we do in our classrooms.

At our academies, the discipline of art is taught from the early age of kindergarten. They commence with the basic elements of art (line, shape, color, texture, value, form, space) and gradually increase the level and rigor of curriculum as the students age. This component of a Great Hearts education is the Beauty piece in our motto of Truth, Goodness and Beauty. We don't solely teach our kids how to make art, we teach them to know it, understand it, appreciate it and love it. Art is taught because it is beautiful and true in its most basic form. Students aren't merely shown how to draw a circle and color in between the lines. We want them to dig deeper and genuinely understand why art is so powerful and what it symbolizes in the human experience.

All Great Hearts students are exposed to countless works of art every time they come to school. Our hallways are a keen example of our deep commitment to timeless pieces of art. We have over sixty carefully chosen paintings lining our hallways. Every time a student leaves their classroom, they will see at least three different pieces of art. It is not uncommon to find children standing in the hallway, simply staring at one of the pieces, basking in its beauty. Many times, teachers will have to remind students that we can appreciate the art at a later time when they're not supposed to be in class. It is truly rewarding witnessing children so little appreciate something so abstract and real.

Our scholars work hard during art class and are proud of the things they've learned and the creations they've made. When it is safe to gather in person, we look forward to welcoming the GHLO Community to an art gallery of all of the stunning works of art our talented scholars have made!
