Message from the Interim Executive Director
Dear Colleague,

Throughout the pandemic, my husband Ken (my best volunteer) has been attending a weekly online meditation group hosted by his friend John in San Diego. Although I can never attend, I read the introduction every single week and always find a beautiful lesson. Here is one John recently shared from an ancient koan you may find especially poignant right now:

A student asked, “When times of great difficulty visit us, how should we meet them?” The teacher said, “Welcome.”

I have been so amazed by your extraordinary strength and flexibility and the responsiveness of every nonprofit and all of our allies throughout Monterey County – exemplified by the wonderful images and stories shared throughout our 2021 NAMC Nonprofit Awards Celebration.

As we all continue to uncover and respond to crises and opportunities, we hope you find NAMC programs more and more helpful. Please read on for more ways for you and your teams to connect, collaborate, and succeed!

8th Annual Nonprofit Awards Celebration 2021! A Wonderful (Hybrid) Success!
So many exquisite memories for such a poignant year! Special thanks to everyone who attended -- in person or virtually. Among the highlights: we opened with our Red Carpet and Palenke Arts Jazz Combo as well as roving interviews with Lisa Griffin Burns. Amber Guzman opened the program with a moving rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner. Perry Flicker Award Recipient Katy Castagna was amazing in her remarks. And, we had more fun than ever with our unsung heroes thanks to remarkable donors such as The Western Stage, Scott Jacobs, and our intrepid videographer Clark Sugabo. Thanks to Community Builders, we presented a new feature – a slideshow tribute to nonprofit volunteer efforts around the county this past year.

Each celebration depends on our wonderful sponsors and tremendous volunteer power -- join our team anytime by sending a note to Paulette Lynch: paulettelynch12@gmail.com We welcome your energy and ideas. (And meanwhile, start thinking now about whom to nominate in 2022!)

ACTION Staff Changes!
Thank You, Larry Imwalle, Welcome Andrea Manzo!!

Congratulations to Larry Imwalle! We appreciate his 17 years of leadership service at ACTION (formerly Action Council for Monterey County). We wish him well in his new position as the Homelessness Response Manager for the City of Santa Cruz! Under his leadership, ACTION has been an incubator of new organizations and emerging leaders. “I look forward to working with you all in the future as we continue to collectively build a more equitable and just community,” he noted in a recent letter to the community.

Welcome to Andrea Manzo as the new Executive Director – after most recently serving as Regional Equity Director, Building Healthy Communities. The mission of ACTION is “empowering people…to transform their communities in Monterey County and beyond.” We look forward to learning more about ACTION plans in the near future.
Public Service Loan Forgiveness Updates: Nonprofit Employees Included
If you are employed by a nonprofit or government and have student loan debt, you may be eligible for loan forgiveness, cancellation, and/or consolidation of federal student loans under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program (PSLF). Under this program, borrowers who work full time (at least 30 hours per week) for nonprofits and government agencies may have their outstanding debt forgiven tax-free on Federal Direct Loans, after making 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan. Borrowers could apply for forgiveness under PSLF in 2017. Also, on October 6, 2021, the U.S. Department of Education announced a temporary expansion to provide more borrowers access to forgiveness. To check for eligibility and start the process, visit www.StudentAid.gov/PSLF
