October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women, according to the Centers for Disease Control. According to current statistics, 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime. Although one of the contributing factors is related to age, particularly for women over 50, breast cancer can and does affect women who are younger than that. Although rare in men, breast cancer may affect males as well.
Breast Cancer By The Numbers
  • 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with cancer.
  • Every two minutes, one case of breast cancer is diagnosed in a woman in the U.S.
  • About 85% of diagnoses occur in women with no family history of breast cancer.
  • Every 13 minutes, one woman in the U.S. will lose her life to breast cancer.
  • In 1980, the 5 year relative survival rate for women diagnosed with early stage breast cancer (cancer confined to the breast) was about 74 percent. Today, that number is 99 percent.
  • Men make up 1 % of all breast cancer cases.
  • Early detection saves lives!
