Can a Merger Be in Your School's Future?

"Which independent schools should consider a merger? All of them. It’s not about profits, but rather perpetuating the mission in a changing marketplace." This subtitle to an article published by the National Business Officers Association (NBOA) in Sept, 2019 discusses why independent schools might consider a merger and how that decision making process differs from a for-profit merger. Invitation to the Dance: Mergers & Acquisitions suggests that a more accurate description of independent school mergers would be 'mergers & collaboration' not acquisition. Considerations about mergers should not solely occur at a time when a school needs to be saved but rather be motivated by and rooted in mission to 'accomplish more and fulfill a higher mission.'

The article is an extract from an NBOA white paper, "Mergers and Acquisitions - Legal, Financial and Tax Considerations for Independent Schools." This white paper includes information on nonprofit mergers and acquisitions, suggestions for kickstarting leadership conversations, processes for assessing a potential partner, types of school combinations, and key areas of due diligence, among other insights specific to independent schools. You can read (or purchase) the full white paper from the NBOA bookstore.
