Message from SEAMASS President Bassem Almuti, PE
The devastation and loss of life in Turkey and Syria resulting from recent earthquakes have triggered an outpouring of support and response from around the world. The photos and stories are truly staggering, and recovery efforts will clearly continue for the foreseeable future.
NCSEA, SEAMASS, and practicing structural engineers throughout the U.S. are not alone as we process this disaster and seek to provide assistance to those affected. The intent of this message is to remind you of available resources to prepare when a disaster strikes.
For international events, most NCSEA members will not respond in-person, at least not formally under the Structural Engineering Emergency Response (SEER) “2nd Responder” program and the Disaster Response Alliance database, which are generally set up for disasters within the U.S. However, we know that many people are contributing to humanitarian aid efforts in various ways from afar, and some structural engineers from the U.S. are engaging in the response in-person. For example, formally trained members of search-and-rescue teams, or those who may be engaged in the response and post-earthquake reconnaissance through their company or involvement in other professional or humanitarian organizations.

SEAMASS is eager to hear and learn from those with firsthand experiences, and to share that information with our community of practicing structural engineers.

This international event serves as a reminder of the need to be prepared to respond to the next disaster here at home, and the links below provide summaries of pre-disaster actions that can be taken by individuals and by SEAMASS. The vision of NCSEA and SEAMASS is that structural engineers are valued for their contributions to creating safe structures and resilient communities. To this end, we share lessons learned from disasters and convert them into practice, to proactively mitigate potential disasters and be better prepared to respond to future events.

These resources and more are listed on our SEAMASS Resources page:

If you would like to join the SEAMASS SEER Committee, please contact Committee Chair Michael Fillion, PE, who also has an article in this issue.

In this issue, you'll find opportunities for professional development, as well as calls for Scholarship applicants and nominations to our Board of Directors. You'll meet a founding SEAMASS member, and hear of recent Young Member Group and NCSEA initatives. You'll learn of new members, sponsors, and career opportunities. Happy Spring, and thank you for your participation and support of SEAMASS.

Sincerely,
Bassem Almuti, PE, LEED AP BD + C | SEAMASS President

Member Profile: Cynthia L. Chabot, PE
Cynthia L. Chabot, PE

Cindy Chabot is Principal of Chabot Engineering in Melrose, MA as well as a former president of the Boston Association of Structural Engineers/BASE (2005-2006), and first president of SEAMASS (2006-2008). She has more than 35 years of structural engineering experience, more recently primarily serving residential clients.
Cindy enjoys working closely with homeowners to help them through what is typically a new process for them. She earned her bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering from Northeastern University. She has answered the questions below, so we may get to know her better. Thank you, Cindy, for your contributions to BASE, SEAMASS and the Structural Engineering profession!

Why did you join SEAMASS?
My first 15 years of experience was working with large companies who worked on the Central Artery Project. From that experience I came to understand the value of knowing other structural engineers who can guide you along your career path. When I began my company in 2001, I joined BASE, which was the only other professional organization for vertical construction. Since BASE was focused on the business side, the Boston area was in need of a professional organization that served the technical side. Many people in BASE, along with myself, decided to create SEAMASS.

As an engineer, what accomplishments are you most proud of?
I’m proud that I had the opportunity to...  READ MORE

Building Safety & Structural Engineering Emergency Response
by Michael Fillion, PE, SECB | Chair, NCSEA Existing Buildings Code
Recently, the MA AEER, MA Architects and Engineers Emergency Response Group disbanded. SEAMASS believes it's important to have an engineers’ emergency response group of second responders in the aftermath of disasters. We have been in communication with the New York City emergency response group and will be coordinating building safety and emergency response trainings in an effort to keep members engaged. A SEAMASS Building Safety and Structural Engineering Emergency Response Leadership meeting is being planned for this spring. If you are interested in being a member, please contact me for details; we would be glad to have you on board.
NCSEA Updates & Initiatives
We SEE Above & Beyond is the powerful theme of NCSEA’s brand initiative and marketing campaign that describes the valuable ways structural engineers contribute to the design and construction of built structures and resilient communities.
Structural Engineering Excellence serves as a guiding principle for the profession. We SEE Above & Beyond is a unifying message of what Structural Engineers do. It was developed to build awareness of the vital, valuable impact that Structural Engineers make within their communities and the world. The campaign landing page provides more info and resources, including this two-minute video.

Please help communicate to the entire AEC community the value that structural engineers bring to society! Simply like, comment, and share the information on NCSEA's LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter platforms on your own social media.
