RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS

A manuscript co-authored by members of the Science Communication Research group (Associate Professor Hong Vu, Assistant Professor Jeff Conlin, doctoral candidates Annalise Baines and Nhung Nguyen) has been accepted for publication in the Online Media & Global Communication journal. The study titled: "What influences public support for plastic waste control policies and green consumption? Evidence from a multilevel analysis of survey data from 27 European countries" found that diversity of environmental news sources is a strong predictor of support for plastic waste management policies and green consumption. At the country level, wealth is associated with green consumption.

The 2023 CEHCUP Research Exhibition showcasing research by faculty, alumni and graduate students on the topic of "COVID-19 and Society" is open online and at the Clarkson Gallery in Stauffer-Flint Hall. Those interested can experience the research posters in augmented reality (AR) by scanning the QR codes posted in the gallery. For those who prefer to see the posters in a web browser or want to experience the AR versions on their own premises, go to the CEHCUP website. The exhibition will run until March 15, 2023.

Professor Yvonnes Chen, the newest Honors Faculty Fellow, hosted the first of a three-part Take Care Tuesday series for University Honors Programs on Feb. 21. This series focuses on technology, the media and the potential for a healthier, more mindful approach to both. In the first series, attendees discussed their media diet, experiences with technology, and perceived effect of the media on their lives. The session concluded with a mindfulness practice.

Living in Color Honors Program

Professor Yvonnes Chen (far right) joined three other panelists Feb. 13 for Living in Color, an Honors Program that provides a welcoming, connected community for students, staff members and faculty members of color in the program to center their stories, receive support and learn about resources.

INSIDE THE SCHOOL

The J-School is now accepting nominations for two faculty awards. The deadline is March 9.

The new Anne and Jack Bowling Family Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes outstanding contributions to teaching students and provides a monetary award. Nominees must be full-time faculty members and have worked full-time in the school for a minimum of three years.

Tim Bengtson Mentor Award is given to a faculty member who goes above and beyond the classroom by lending a helping hand to inspire students to reach their full potential. The winner receives a monetary award, their name on a plaque and a memento.

International journalists visit J-School

Last week, the J-School hosted 13 international journalists and three interpreters from Near East and North Africa. The visit was arranged through the U.S. Department of State and Global Ties KC as part the Edward R. Murrow Journalism — U.S. Foreign Policy program, which is designed to highlight the significance of a free and independent press to the democratic process. The guests toured the school facilities and had lunch and a roundtable discussion with J-School faculty. Later in the day, the group also visited with students. Roundtable discussants were:

  • Patricia Gaston, Lacy C. Haynes Professor of Journalism
  • Lisa McLendon, Multimedia Journalism Concentration Chair
  • Steve Wolgast, Knight Chair in Audience and Community Engagement for News
  • Amal El Haimeur, Assistant Teaching Professor of Arabic and African and African-American Studies
  • Mike Wuthrich, Associate Professor of Political Science
