Honoring Dr. Robert W. Parkey

This week, the UT Southwestern Radiology community is saddened by the passing of former Chair, Robert W. Parkey, M.D., Professor Emeritus of Radiology.

Announcement from EVP and Dean Dr. W.P. Andrew Lee, M.D.:

"His death represents a great loss for the entire UT Southwestern community, and we offer our sincerest condolences to Dr. Parkey’s family.

After receiving a bachelor's degree in physics from UT Austin, Dr. Parkey pursued his medical degree at UT Southwestern. He completed his residency training in diagnostic radiology at Parkland Hospital and a fellowship in radiological data processing at the University of Missouri, sponsored by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. Dr. Parkey returned to UT Southwestern in 1970 and shortly after became Chief of Nuclear Medicine. In 1977, Dr. Parkey was appointed Chair of the Department of Radiology. Under his leadership, the department grew in size and technical capacity. He recruited and retained talented faculty, fellows, residents, technologists, and staff. With a keen eye for innovation, Dr. Parkey successfully advocated for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) clinical unit, allowing UT Southwestern to be one of the early academic sites to engage in research and clinical care on a commercial instrument. His scientific discoveries helped develop nuclear scanning techniques to diagnose, localize, and measure acute heart attacks noninvasively.

Throughout his 33-year tenure as Chair, Dr. Parkey embraced the rapid development of medical imaging. His contributions were essential to the development of the Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Facility, the Mary Nell and Ralph B. Rogers Magnetic Resonance Imaging Center, Zale Lipshy Pavilion – William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, and the Bill and Rita Clements Advanced Medical Imaging Building.

Dr. Parkey was appointed the Effie and Wofford Cain Distinguished Chair in Diagnostic Imaging in 1994. In 2007, Parkland Hospital honored him with its Hero of Our Heritage Award. He also was recognized with the Lifetime Service Award from the American Board of Radiology (2010) and the Gold Medal from the Texas Radiological Society (2012).

A committed educator, Dr. Parkey received top teaching honors from UT Southwestern students several times. He considered his greatest accomplishment the many students and residents he trained through the years. In 2016, the Department of Radiology established the Robert W. Parkey, M.D. Distinguished Professorship in Radiology in his honor. "

We Remember His Impact & Legacy

"It was an honor to receive the baton from Dr. Parkey to lead our department. I respected his knowledge and his management style. The latter is neatly conveyed in a discussion, shortly after I arrived, when he said, “Neil, if you don’t need me, you won’t see me; but anytime you need me, I’ll be there.”

Of note, the field of cardiac nuclear medicine and the subsequent implications for patient management were transformed by his meticulous, innovative, and collaborative approach, a legacy to honor through our actions."

-Neil Rofsky, M.D., M.H.A, FACR

"Bob Parkey was an innovator.

He brought the first MRI west of the Mississippi River and to UT Southwestern 40 years ago. This allowed medical students like me to experience the wonders of imaging and choose the exciting field of radiology.

Bob Parkey was inspirational.

His Nuclear Medicine research was groundbreaking and his enthusiasm for sharing his passion of imaging among students and trainees was endless.

Bob Parkey was a leader.

His unconditional support, trust and loyalty of his fellow faculty was unwavering.

Bob Parkey was a great person.

He never met a stranger. He was kind, thoughtful, and really funny. His trademark look of carrying an unlit cigar on the side of his mouth and his affable smile will live in our memories."

-Diane Twickler, M.D., FACR

"Dr. Parkey deeply touched generations of aspiring young radiologists through his generous and kind mentoring. Especially notable was his deep commitment to fostering the careers of female radiologists.

His legacy continues through the vast numbers of colleagues, residents and students he mentored. Dr. Bob Parkey was truly a compassionate and genuine person who cared deeply about others, including his mentees, patients, family and humanity. Dr. Bob Parkey will be remembered as a giant in the field of Radiology and among people."

-Julie Champine, M.D., FACR
