New initiatives at EPIC
I'm delighted to share some additions to EPIC's programming:
  • Virtual cocktail hours now include brief invited remarks by an EPICurean we've asked to share something of themselves outside their professional career at Columbia - another way in which we can get to know each other a little better. Hoshi Khambatta will kick off the series by sharing his post-anesthesiologist experiences as a trained practicing philosopher. Three copies of his book on Plato's Dialogs will be given as door prizes. If you're an EPICurean, click here for a link to the party TODAY, March 12 at 4 PM!

  • EPIC is happy to announce a new collaboration with Columbia's outstanding Music Performance Program. We'll share the joyful experience of students performing and speaking about their music and instruments. Prof. Emeritus Dan Thys and Program Director Magdalena Stern-Bacwzewska, DMA will coordinate concerts throughout the year (RSVP below). The collaboration is an extension of our successful Graduate Scholar Series. These intergenerational events are rewarding and allow us to provide modest honorarium support to outstanding students.

It is exactly one year ago that the EPIC Steering Committee voted to suspend Faculty House meetings - not imagining what was to follow. Our March 23 Tuesday Talk is devoted to COVID - we all have many questions. One silver lining of the pandemic is we've learned to use Zoom more effectively. When we finally do return to Faculty House we'll be better able to include colleagues unable to join us in person!

Have a good day - and join us for virtual "cocktails" at 4PM today.

COLORS: A Chamber Music Original
Columbia students Vincent Le and Isaac Horwitz play piano (Le) and trumpet (Horowitz) duets from Le's original composition Colors where the colors Blue, Red, Green, Violet, Yellow and Orange are themes for its six movements. Le will also share with us his thoughts about the composition, its original instrumentation and the current adaptation as a piano and trumpet duet we will hear performed.

ONLINE EPIC Yoga: Every Thursday
10 am - 11 am and 11:15 am - 12:15 pm
Professor Emerita Virginia Papaioannou, a registered teacher with the Yoga Alliance, leads EPIC Yoga.
No prior experience is required to join. Yoga can benefit people at all levels of physical training and health, but it is always wise to consult with a physician before undertaking any new exercise regime. Modifications will be offered to any participants with specific limitations arising from recovery from injury, arthritis, limited movement, or other causes.

Two one-hour classes are offered each week. The 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. class practices breathing techniques and moves through some basic yoga poses, concentrating on alignment, balance, and flexibility. Those with experience move more deeply into the poses. From 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., we practice gentle/chair yoga, which is ideal for those of more limited mobility or flexibility. Classes include breathing, stretching, and yoga poses, done either seated in a chair or standing. No yoga mats are required for this class.
