This is a special edition of our community newsletter for we have several exciting announcements to share below. Even in the midst of the pandemic, we have been able to move several projects forward.

LSC-Houston North Fallbrook Update |
|
We received the certificate of occupancy this past week. Currently, we are in the process of installing the audiovisual equipment and furniture.
Please note that we will host a hybrid community town hall at Fallbrook Church on Thursday, November 19 at 6 p.m. to discuss the new location. There will be some in-person seating but the event will also be shown through the LSC-Houston North social media. I will give a short overview of the building and programs and then take questions from the community. Follow us on social media to view the live-stream link.

Registration Rallies
We will also have registration rallies during the first three Saturdays in December from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. Please come out to take a tour of the building and/or learn about our new programs and offerings. Note that we will have a raffle at each of these events for a scholarship to cover one free LSC-Houston North Fallbrook course.

Spring Registration is Open |
|
Registration is now open for our Spring 2021 sessions.
I am very pleased that despite the disproportionate and widespread impact of the pandemic upon our collective service areas, LSC-Houston North still started our second 8-week term with enrollment growth.
We have high hopes for this spring and fall semesters—-especially with our new editions of Chemistry and Mechanical Design labs at Fairbanks and our new Fallbrook location.
Please note that the first set of 8-week classes begin January 19. The second set of courses begin March 24.

Laptops Available to LSC-HN Students |
|
|
|
Students registering this spring will have the ability to receive loaner laptops. Our Chancellor, Dr. Stephen C. Head, does not want technology to be a barrier to any student enrolling in classes.
Students that come to our registration rallies at Fallbrook in December will be able to get laptops at the events if they enroll in 6 credit hours and meet the needed criteria.

As we have noted in earlier newsletters, most of our classes are currently online. This worried me for the students at our locations have not had as high of completion rates in these courses. There are just many issues in relation to technology, learning environments, and in some cases, learning styles that have not worked as well with our student body.
However, despite most of our classes being online, our students still performed very well during our first 8-weeks. Our course completion and success rates were still on par with those from the previous fall semester and trending higher than the overall system average.

Drive-in Movie Event
I want to thank everyone that participated in our free drive-in movie event at our Victory location. This event was our way to offer a special thank you to the community for being such great supporters of the college. Special thanks to Charter Communications and Burns BBQ for helping to sponsor this event.

Dress for Success Event
We held our first Dress for Success event at Greenspoint earlier in the month. Students received personalized resume-building assistance, interview coaching, and free professional outfits. It is our plan to have five of these events each year.
Special thanks to Pastor Linda Davis who provided us with a generous donations of clothing from the Banana Republic.

Aldine-Greenspoint YMCA / LSC-Houston North Food Drive |

Food Distribution Partnerships
We were fortunate to be able to partner with the Aldine-Greenspoint YMCA and the Houston Food Bank to host a food distribution earlier this month at our Greenspoint location. Approximately 768 families were served. We will have another food distribution at Greenspoint on Thursday, November 19 at 10 a.m.
Please share this flyer with anyone that may be interested in the event, or our upcoming December dates: December 3rd and 17th.
All food will be placed into the recipients’ vehicles for the purpose of protecting all involved from a potential spread of COVID-19.

The LSC-Houston North ESOL program at our Fairbanks location provides an introduction to the language and culture of the English-speaking world, preparing students to successfully speak and write English for college or work. We offer courses in reading, writing, oral communication, and grammar.

At Lone Star College-Houston North, we recognize the difficult task of obtaining your degree while balancing life’s many responsibilities, such as work and childcare. LSC-Houston North has a unique opportunity for you to do both!
Through our Weekend College, you can select from three different degree plans meeting on Saturdays from 8 a.m.– 3 p.m. Give us one day a week and in under two years, you will be graduating with your degree!

Eliminating Food Insecurities
With the right structure and adequate support, our students are capable of succeeding academically and professionally.
For this reason, we have Community Assistance Resource for Everyone (C.A.R.E.) Centers that are located at all LSC-Houston North locations.
The CARE Center is open to any currently enrolled LSC-Houston North student and provides CARE bags and CARE packages that include food, toiletries, and other essentials.

Did You Know?
At LSC-Houston North we put students first. Each first time in college student receives a faculty mentor to help guide them through their first year of college. Research indicates that effective mentoring is one of the most powerful relationships for influencing human behavior.
Sometimes, all a student need is someone to lend a caring ear. Just being able to speak to someone and share troubles, feelings, emotions and fears has a way of making these issues seem smaller. Our mentors are in place to provide guidance for our students and steer them in the right direction.
