WHY: Teacher Spotlight
Teacher of the Year: Ms. Vazquez!

Q: What is your Educational background?
A: I have been teaching 15 years: 13 in 4th grade, 1 year in 5th, 1 year in 3rd grade. Fourth grade is my favorite. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Universidad del Turabo in Puerto Rico. I got my Master’s degree in English for Speakers of Other Languages from Western Governors University.

Q: How/ when did you discover your passion for teaching?
A: I am the eldest of five children, so I was the teacher. I would make diagrams of plants for my siblings to label and test them on the parts of a plant, times tables, and reading. My two grandmothers and one grandfather were all teachers. They had big expectations for all of us. Instead of watching TV, we read and made book reports to read at the dinner table. I loved going with my grandmother to her school when she became a Principal and spending time in different classrooms. I was a teacher helper when I went to school, and enjoyed grading papers, making copies, and looking at their lesson plans.

Q: How do you feel about becoming LCE’s teacher of the year?
A: I feel extremely happy, much honored to be teacher of the year. I enjoy my time with my students and try to make lessons fun and engaging. I put a lot of effort in building positive relationships with my students and making them feel good about their effort. I am very grateful that my dedication has been noted, especially in a school where every single one of the teachers can be teacher of the year because we do have a very strong and creative instructional staff.

Q: What advice would you share with people who are interested in becoming teachers?
A: There will always be challenges. New viruses, changes to education policies, budget constraints, poor appreciation for our profession. As cheesy as it sounds, just think of the kids and find gratification in our daily interactions with them. Adults are difficult, I always say I prefer to work with the children. They don’t hold grudges, they are funny, and sensitive, they want to do well, and they want people to feel proud of them. Give them the chance, there is truly greatness and amusing happenings in each one of them. Make a difference by treating them right and value them. Keep a positive mind, even on the hard days, find humor in it. It’s all about your state of mind and the love for the kids. You will feel better when you look back, you were there for them regardless of the rewards.

Q: What would your students say you are best known for?
A: I think I am known for my love for the students and being silly. They laugh a lot, and they know they are loved and respected. I might definitely be known also by my obsession with ladybugs.

Q: What has been your most memorable moment in the classroom?
A: I think the most amusing was when one of my students asked me for help because she decided to keep three lizards in her pockets. She handed me the lizards and I let them out the window.

Q: Anything else that you would like people to know about you (hobbies /interests)?
A: I read, a lot! I still don’t like TV much. I have a gorgeous three-year-old granddaughter, Arya, who takes most of my free time. I collect stickers and decorate agendas. I am very easy going, so no exciting hobbies.
Congratulations Ms. Vazquez!

WHAT: Data & Goals
Each school year, students participate in i-Ready reading and math diagnostics. This computer-based assessment is given three times a year: beginning, middle and end. i-Ready addresses different domains. In reading the domains are phonological awareness, phonics, high-frequency words, vocabulary, comprehension: literature, and comprehension: informational text. The domains in math are numbers and operations, algebra and algebraic thinking, measurement and data, and geometry. Based on results, lessons are assigned to address student needs.

  • Based on schoolwide i-Ready beginning-of-the-year reading data, 27% of students at Lawton Chiles are Tier 1 (on grade level). Forty-seven percent of students are working at Tier 2 (1-2 grade level below). Twenty-six percent of students at Lawton Chiles are Tier 3 (3 or more grade levels below).

  • Based on schoolwide i-Ready beginning-of-the-year math data, 14% of students at Lawton Chiles are Tier 1, 62% of students are Tier 2, and 24% of students are Tier 3.

i-Ready is available for students to complete at home. They should complete 45 minutes per week in both reading and math.

Interventions in reading and math are in place to address all student needs to help reach grade level expectations.

Ways to promote student achievement include:

  • Encourage your student to read nightly.
  • Ask your student comprehension questions on what they have read; i.e. “Who is the main character?” “What is the problem in the story?”
  • Practice math facts (multiplication, division) via flashcards or Reflex Math.
  • Sign your student up for after school tutoring at school once it is announced.

Lawton Chiles Elementary will continue to plan engaging, standards based lessons, to help all students meet grade level expectations. Engaging students in collaborative opportunities, academic discussions, and various learning modalities to meet the needs of all learners.
