Researcher Spotlight

Brenden Timpe,
University of Nebraska–Lincoln

Brenden Timpe is an assistant professor of economics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

His research focuses on labor economics, public policy and economic demography.

What is the future direction for your early childhood research?
"I plan to continue exploring the implications of early childhood education on children’s health and long-run social and economic outcomes. While the academic literature has developed compelling evidence that preschool and other early interventions can be beneficial, there is still much work to do to understand the mechanisms that determine these long-run effects."

Are there any new research projects or activities you are starting on now?
"I hope to soon begin work on a newly approved project at the Central Plains Research Data Center that will allow us to study the effect of preschool on education and labor-market outcomes using linked administrative and survey data."

Why is early childhood research important?
"A large and growing body of research makes clear that early life conditions have a substantial, long-lasting impact on child development. We all have a lot at stake in understanding the development process and getting policy right."

What is a strength of early childhood research at the University of Nebraska?
"The university is home to a healthy community of early childhood education researchers from a wide variety of disciplines. In addition, the Central Plains Research Data Center provides an opportunity to study questions that would be impossible to answer without access to restricted survey and administrative data."
