Dear CFMS Families,

It's a five day week! And we kick it off with Start with Hello, a way to teach empathy by empowering students to end social isolation. The steps will be taught during advisory periods with activities during recess. Students and staff are encouraged to wear GREEN on Wednesday in support of the Sandy Hook Promise. (Details within the newsletter.)

We are partnering with LIFE ACT again in order to provide meaningful education and resources when it comes to recognizing healthy and unhealthy responses to stress. Sessions will take place in Social Studies this week. (Details within newsletter.)

Lastly, we will be hosting Flexible Parent-Teacher Conferences on September 30th from 3:00-7:00 pm. Informational letter HERE. Website Link sign ups HERE, which are available until September 27th. Students succeed when school and home create support systems together!

Life Act
September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. This year, we are again partnering with LifeAct, an organization based in Chagrin Falls, who will come to our school and provide meaningful education and resources to our students when it comes to recognizing healthy and unhealthy responses to stress. LifeAct's mission is "to prevent suicide by teaching young people to recognize the warning signs of suicide in themselves and their peers, and to seek professional help."

LifeAct will bring in staff to educate our students within their social studies classes over a two-day period. Students will receive these lessons in their social studies classes on September 23rd and 24th. Please see the attachment regarding LifeAct's school-based program and visit their website to learn more.

If you have any questions, concerns, or would like to opt your student out of these lessons, please contact me.

CFMS Clubs and Activities - Check them out HERE!

A major benefit for middle schoolers participating in extracurricular activities is how they can foster a life-long passion. Middle school is a time for students to start discovering their personal interests and passions that they may want to develop later in life. By giving students the opportunity to experiment with various extracurricular activities outside of their academic life, one opens the door for a potential future in arts, music, sports or theater that may not have been sparked by strictly academic work.

Monday - Say "Hi" in the hallways
We often get trapped in our routines. Routines can be very useful, but they can also hinder us from seeing what is happening around us, meeting others and embracing new opportunities that may exist.
Use your class changes as an opportunity to greet students and staff in the halls and notice how simple greetings can have a positive change in your day and our school climate.
Tuesday - Build up others
It’s easy to forget to remind people how much you appreciate them. Taking time to notice others and building them up can make a world of difference.
Reflect on how you feel when others go out of their way to say something kind to you. Make a conscious effort to express your appreciation for others, give compliments, and find ways to build others up. Write a shout out, make a card, or send a nice email to someone.
Wednesday - Be inclusive (Wear Green to school!)
We might overlook situations when others are left out, even unintentionally. Look out for one another and make efforts to be inclusive. Pay attention at lunch/recess, sports practices, when you’re walking into town, and find those who are on the outskirts of the group. Invite them into the conversation, ask them questions. Get to know them. We all must work together to make everyone feel connected.
Thursday - Take the Message outside of School
Start With Hello’s message doesn’t just apply to when you are in school. What opportunities exist when you leave this building to make positive connections? When you get on the bus, when you’re out in the community, when you’re home with your family, there are ways to continue to make positive connections, greet others with a smile, and make small ripples of change with your kindness. Embrace opportunities to simply say hi and greet others with kindness in all situations and see how the atmosphere and your interactions with others change.
Friday - Be the one to act
Start With Hello Week is a great reminder to be on the lookout for others and to reach out and make a difference. However, the efforts must extend beyond this week to truly be effective. Commit to finding opportunities to look out for others and to make connections. You have the power to make an enormous difference in the lives of others through the simple acts of caring and reaching out.

this month’s topic… Adjustment

The beginning of the school year can be very exciting- new friends, new supplies, new teachers! However, for some children, the beginning of the school year can also be anxiety provoking- new friends to get used to, new supplies to figure out, new teachers to learn about. Anxiety in new or unknown situations is both common and normal. The good news is that the “newness” subsides as children learn their routines and adjust to their teachers and classmates. We can help this process by talking about what is going well and what children continue to feel uncertain about. We can review schedules, have children demonstrate what papers go where when checking homework, and ask about what they have learned about teachers or friends. As adjustment increases, anxiety should decrease. Continue to monitor this, and by the time you’re reading the next newsletter, those new year butterflies will be a thing of the past!
