Dear 5th Grade Parents,

What a transition your son or daughter has had to middle school! We appreciate your tenacity and adaptability as we navigate this unusual fall together.

This email contains very important information for the month of October so please read it carefully and save it to refer to as needed.

Next week brings a CHANGE to your 5th grade student’s schedule as most of our 5th and 6th grade students prepare to transition to hybrid learning (Plan B) beginning October 12.

In order to practice both the new hybrid learning schedule and cohort format, we are conducting a test run next week beginning Monday, October 5. (For those of you who also have a student in 7th or 8th grades, it is very important to know that some of this information is specific to 5th and 6th grades only. Please do not assume all of the information contained here applies to your 7th and 8th grade child as well.)

What does this mean for my 5th grade student on Monday, October 5?

Three things will change for your 5th grade student on Monday, October 5:
Schedule – Your 5th grade child will follow the hybrid learning schedule. This means the school day will begin at 8:00 AM and end at 2:00 PM. This also means that your child’s class period times lengthen to fill the longer school day. Here is the new “bell schedule” for hybrid learning that your student will begin following next Monday, October 5 and will continue to follow as long as we remain in hybrid learning at LNC. We recommend that you print a copy of this bell schedule for your child and family to refer to. Please discard the remote learning schedule (Plan C) as it no longer applies. Today is the last day your child will follow it with the exception of teacher professional development days, which we will notify you of in advance.
Cohorts – Your 5th grade child will begin operating in his or her cohort. Instead of having 20 some classmates, they will have half that number.

  • Cohort 1 – Students in cohort 1 can expect that on Monday, October 5 and Thursday, October 8 they will experience synchronous learning to mimic their two “at school” days and on Tuesday, October 6 and Friday, October 9 they will experience asynchronous learning to practice what their “at home” days will look like. It is important to understand that on your child’s “at home” days they will usually be working independently as the teacher is “in person” with the other cohort. Therefore, on their asynchronous days, students will not be required to adhere to their hybrid learning class periods, although they may sometimes be requested to do so on a teacher by teacher basis.

  • Cohort 2 – Students in cohort 2 can expect that on Monday, October 5 and Thursday, October 8 they will experience asynchronous learning to practice what their “at home” days will look like. On Tuesday, October 6 and Friday, October 9 they will experience synchronous learning to mimic their two “at school” days.

Remember, LNC’s cohorts largely break down with students with last names beginning A-La in cohort 1 and students with last names beginning Le-Z in cohort 2. There are some exceptions and if your family is among them you are aware.

AttendanceThere are several important changes with how your students will log their attendance. During next week’s test run, your 5th grade child will answer the attendance question in their core 1/ homeroom on both their “at school” cohort days and "at home" cohort days. Moving forward, it is important to understand that on your child’s “at home” days they will usually be working independently as the teacher is “in person” with the other cohort. Therefore, they will not be required to adhere to their hybrid learning class periods on those days, although they may sometimes be requested to do so on a teacher by teacher basis.

What does NOT change is that your child will still be learning entirely from home next week (October 5 & 6 and 8 & 9), NOT on campus. Wednesday, October 7 remains a student seminar with no changes, i.e., your student can follow their teacher’s procedure for scheduling extra support as needed.

Early next week we will share important information that you will need as we prepare to move into actual hybrid learning where half of our students are physically at school beginning Monday, October 12. We hope the schedule below will help further explain what our MS families can expect over the course of October.
