Resources for Live Streaming Instruction
Dear Educators,

We hope you are doing well as we prepare to welcome more students back in person and continue to teach others remotely in our virtual program. Thank you for your continued adaptability and flexibility during these unusual times and through these new styles of teaching.

As our families finalize their selection for in-person or the virtual program for this semester, we know it may not always be possible to match virtual students with virtual teachers and in-person students with in-person teachers. In this situation, some schools and classrooms may need to provide live-streaming instruction to meet the demands of both in-person and virtual student groups.

To support, we wanted to share a professional learning opportunity as well as resources and guidance:

  • Professional Learning: Click here to register for professional learning, including planning, classroom setup, communication and collaboration and more. If you have any questions, please email Adrienne Endres.

  • Live Streaming 101 Course: Watch these videos from the Education Technology & Library Services Department, including getting started in the classroom with live streaming and a playlist that goes over using a document camera, headsets and computer for instruction, as well as provides examples of whole group, small group and support with Google Meet in the classroom. If you need support with live streaming, please reach out to your Regional/Digital Coach.

Many thanks,
Tamara and Mike

As a follow up to the Sept. 9 Teacher Weekly regarding required LEAP training for all teachers, we wanted to share training information for the changes to LEAP evaluation this year. We realize some teachers may have received multiple Learning Space registration emails last week; we apologize for any confusion and ask that you please disregard those emails. Use this information below for the correct asynchronous training housed online within Schoology, and note that your registration has already been processed within Learning Space:

  • Visit https://schoology.dpsk12.org then Courses > My Courses

  • Access Code: 6FT8-NFMQ-T2P33
  • Length: about 30 minutes
  • Deadline: Oct. 1 (consider using the Sept. 28 Teal Day)

Note: S/TLs only should please register for the Observer Training linked in Leader Weekly.

Lastly, all LEAP observers will receive a LEAP Calibration training, certifying them to score classroom observations in the virtual, hybrid, and/or in-person scenarios starting in mid-November.
Encourage Your Team and Community to Answer September Surveys
As a reminder, student and staff surveys opened last week. These surveys will help school leaders understand a baseline regarding whole child and well-being.

Students and staff have received unique links in their dpsk12.org email accounts. Please encourage your families to use this opportunity to provide feedback to central leadership and school leaders. The link to the survey is not a unique link and can be included in communications. This survey will remain open through Oct. 2.
Invite Your Families to Attend the ELA DAC
We are excited to invite all English Language Acquisition families to the English Language Acquisition District Advisory Committee (ELA DAC) online meeting 5-6:15 p.m. Sept. 24. Topics will include an overview of the ELA program, information on how Title 1 funds should be spent in parent engagement activities, and updates on in-person learning or the virtual program for October 2020. Families can register here and join via Zoom. Note: ELA families have a child learning English as a second language in DPS.
Role of Special Education in the Pre-referral Process (MTSS)
The Special Education Department has developed guidance on the Role of Special Educators and Specialized Service Providers during the pre-referral process. Most schools use a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). Since the re-authorization of the Individuals with a Disability Education Act in 2004 that allowed for a MTSS process to determine if a student’s qualifies for a Specific Learning Disability, there have been many legal case studies that have caused the Federal Office of Special Education to issue guidance on the role of special education staff during any MTSS type of intervention. If you have questions, please reach out to your assigned Special Education Instructional Specialist.
Supporting LGBTQ+ Students
Deepen your understanding of LGBTQ+ inclusion during remote learning and beyond with this professional learning opportunity. Queering Practice in Education will provide support for school leaders, teachers and counselors as they work to support all students during this time. This three-credit, graduate-level course is offered through Continuing Education at CU Boulder. Registration is open until Oct. 1, and space is limited. The course is $740 and some scholarships are available. For more information and to register, click here. Email aqueerendeavor@colorado.edu with questions.
Free RTD Passes for Denver Youth 12-18
Do your students need an RTD pass to support their in-person attendance? Here is an opportunity for free RTD passes, thanks to a partnership with the City of Denver. As a reminder, students who traditionally receive an RTD pass from DPS will continue to do so. The Transportation team will be sharing this resource with secondary students who are traditionally transportation eligible; please reinforce this with students who would benefit. If you have any questions or concerns about this program, please contact mikhail.vafeades@denvergov.org.
