Tryon Ripple 2018
(DOB 7/4/2017)
Ripple is one of two puppies in Craisin’s last litter. Her father was Truckstop, a hound I hunted with for several years. He was very friendly and easy going so I thought he would be a great match for “Crazy Raisin.” Truckstop had a unique style of hunting. He would appear to have little interest, then suddenly lock on and lead the pack.

In the early morning of July 4, 2017, Craisin went into labor. By early evening she was extremely uncomfortable, and I knew she needed veterinary attention. Kaitlyn and I drove her to the emergency clinic in Hendersonville with fireworks lighting the sky. At 11:45 the veterinarian helped her deliver a giant white puppy!  Click here for more..
Clubhouse and Kennel improvements
Significant improvements are underway for the kennels and clubhouse. New drainage and grading has been completed for the kennels. 4 new windows have been installed. Dave Ahrenholz has been relentless in his never-ending quest to find reputable contractors with realistic bids so we can upgrade our buildings. not to mention his exemplary plumbing skills - please thank him next time you flush the toilet in the clubhouse!

Up next is some tree work and a new roof for the clubhouse! Stay tuned!

Tryon Hounds Member Spotlight
Jim Ritchie

Jim grew up in Virginia participating in a variety of sports including showing hunters on the state circuit. College, law school, raising a family and building a career took him away from horses for nearly thirty years. When his youngest child left for Clemson, he decided it was time to get back into riding and equestrian sport. Jim joined Tryon Hounds in 2019 and has become a highly active member. He and his Cleveland Bay, Statesman, ride in first flight and Jim serves as Vice President of the Tryon Hounds Board.  Click here for more..
Sporting Hounds Foundation of Tryon Grant Received!

We are very grateful to the Sporting Hounds Foundation of Tryon for a recent $3600 grant in support of the health and welfare of our hounds! The money will be used to pay for spaying and neutering of some of our hounds, as well as for some much needed hounds dental work. SHFT has been hard at work raising awareness and sharing information about sporting hounds, and is an important partner to the organized hunts in the Tryon area. Many thanks!
  • Kaitlyn Kubiak's first Fox Hunting Clinic in August attracted 25 riders (from first-timers to experienced) and as a result she was able to donate $3,000 to Homeward Hounds - thank you Kubiak Sporthorses!
  • Tryon Hounds also received a $500 donation from the Sporting Hounds of Tryon Foundation for our participation in the Field Hunter Trials. Thank you Carolyn Cadier!
Fund Raising Success Stories

The Fall Hunter Pace

was a huge success - we hosted 137 riders and made $4885 for our beloved hounds. We couldn't have done it without Nelson Minnick's hard work and leadership skills - thanks Nelson!

Third Annual Tryon
Hounds Barn Tour

Over 250 tickets and twenty-five calendars were sold during this year's Barn Tour earning over $9,000 for the club. Kudos go to the six barn owners, the eleven artists and our many volunteers who made it so much fun! Many thanks to Sue Haldeman who helped create our picture collages, map, and poster for our website and Amanda McDonald who organized the event.
Tom Foster Memorial
Sponsored by Chuck Lingerfelt

Tom Foster, who passed away at the age of 80 in August 2021, was a fuxture with Tryon Hounds. He was our social greeter at the bar - always with a smile and easy conversation. Whether at the Tryon Hounds clubhouse, a member's home or any other special function, you could count on Tom to hand you your beverage of choice along with a please word. Click here for more..
Sophia Martin's win at the JFHC

The pouring, cold rain did not stop this junior, as one of the youngest in her division. Steep competition from 21 hunts came together to let these juniors shine in the hunt field. They started with the traditional panoramic picture of them all mounted, then the divisions each departed for their competitions, all in a downpour of rain that made parents grit their teeth.  A hack class on a hill was first then they peeled off on their mock hunt through Iroquois hunt country, with Sophia in one of the largest divisions. She was called back as one of the top 10. The rain subsided so they could complete their traditional individual tests of the field hunters, and she was able finish up in 10th out of a large group of 11-19 yr olds. The Future of Foxhunting…....
Karen Benson's win at
RRP in Kentucky

Karen Benson and "You Betcha" qualified 3rd going into the finals and 5th in Showjumping at this year's Retired Racehorse Project show in Kentucky. Unfortunately "You Betcha" did not pass the final jog to compete in the finals so ended up 5th in both Field Hunters and Show-Jumpers and 1st for Top Amateur Showjumping. A quote from Karen " The RRP was an amazing experience and the happiest show on earth!!"
Tryon Hounds Finances - An Update

We're now eight months into our fiscal year. We originally budgeted a slight loss for the year, but so far we're doing better than expected overall.

  • Our membership has increased significantly - welcome to all and thank you for your support!
  • We have had some major unplanned expenses related to our kennels and our clubhouse. Seems its time for some much needed capital improvements to our facility!
  • On the other hand, the April and October Hunter Paces and the Barn Tour exceeded our participation expectations. Thanks to everyone who volunteered to make these events successful!

Lets keep working together to make this year a successful and enjoyable one!
