from the May 10, 2022 meeting
Administrator Kevin Slavin announced as Curtner Elementary's new principal
Curtner Elementary School has its new principal for the 2022-23 school year as the MUSD Board of Education unanimously approved the promotion of administrator Kevin Slavin at its May 10 meeting.

Slavin, who has served as the Thomas Russell Middle School Assistant Principal over the last three school years, has a leadership vision that includes building healthy, positive relationships, fostering school community, and being present to interact with MUSD learners, team members and families.

"Thank you to the Curtner community for giving me the opportunity to serve, support and lead their school," said Slavin, whose family grew up in the surrounding neighborhood. "Curtner Elementary School holds a special place in my heart....From celebrating my daughter’s first steps outside on the playground to excitingly trying to catch a glimpse of the nesting eagles, Curtner is a place where families can feel safe and welcome."

  
VIDEO RESOLUTIONS
Board unanimously adopts Asian Pacific American Heritage Month resolution
Milpitas High School siblings Natalie and Ashton Chen produced a video reading of Resolution 2022.41 Recognizing May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, which was unanimously adopted by the MUSD Board of Education at the May 10 meeting.
Middle College HS students pay tribute to MUSD educators with video resolution
California’s Day of the Teacher was May 10, in a month filled with appreciation and celebration for educators everywhere.

In California, the 2022 theme is “California Educators: At the Heart of Communities, Powering Our Future.” This holds true especially here in Milpitas, where MUSD teachers have helped guide our diverse learners and families through a myriad of challenges and changes. Indeed, they are powering our future!

At Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting, students from our newest school, Middle College High School, proudly expressed those sentiments with a video reading of Resolution 2022.42 Recognizing Teachers for their Invaluable Contribution to Learners.

RECOGNITIONS
Thomas Russell MS girls volleyball team
The Thomas Russell Middle School girls volleyball team, coached by Tony Suarez, was honored by the Board of Education and District leadership for completing an East Side Athletic League championship season.
MHS freshman Devesh Mamidi
Devesh Mamidi, a freshman at Milpitas HS, was recognized by the Board of Education and District leadership for his prowess in taking second place in the state chess championships.
MHS scholar-athlete Dominic Alvarado
Dominic Alvarado, a senior at Milpitas HS, was recognized by the Board of Education and District leadership for for being an amazing scholar-athlete and being selected for the Central Coast Section (CCS) Jeff Lamb Scholarship.
MUSD English Learner, Biliteracy programs
The Santa Clara County Office of Education awarded Milpitas Unified School District with California English Learner Roadmap, Pathway to Biliteracy and/or Seal of Biliteracy Awards, and My Name, My Identity programs recognitions, which were shared with MUSD Team Members who were integral in that process.
Knights of Columbus and Ocean Market
Milpitas Knights of Columbus and Ocean Market were recognized by the Board of Education and District leadership for their donation to help support our MUSD Special Education learners in jobs and college pathways.

In addition, the Board and District leadership recognized Cady Yu of Bay View Golf Club for in-kind donations to MUSD and offering a beautiful setting for fundraiser events.

HIGHLIGHTS
Summer School 2022 programming provides variety of opportunities for MUSD learners
Milpitas Unified School District is continuing summer school opportunities for students this coming summer.

The district will offer K-3 Love4Literacy, K-12 Newcomer, K-8 PBL, Girlstart, K-12 and Postsecondary Extended School Year for SPED students, 9th Grade Bridge, EL A-G Courses and High School Credit Recovery. The funding sources supporting this programming includes ELO-P, Title I, and Title III.

Learning and Development Directors Maurissa Koide and Raquel Kusunoki led the Summer School 2022 presentation.
MUSD Team reflects on MHS Ethnic Studies pilot courses and future expansion
Last school year, Milpitas High School developed two new Ethnic Studies semester-long courses: Ethnic Studies 1 and Ethnic Studies Literature. This year, MHS piloted the courses, with 58 students enrolled in Ethnic Studies 1 and 40 students enrolled in Ethnic Studies Literature.

Priti Johari, Executive Director, Learning and Innovation; Francis Rojas, MHS Principal; Skyler Draeger, MHS Assistant Principal; Tonichi Lorenzana, Multicultural Literature Teacher; and Audrey Yang, Ethnic Studies Teacher, led the presentation, which provided the board and community with an update of the highlights of each course, opportunities for improvement for year 2, and the next steps MHS will take to include Ethnic Studies as a graduation requirement to meet AB 101.

Mattos Principal Jackie Vo Felbinger and the Mattos school community produced a video report, addressing in-person learning, attendance, engagement, and strategic goals/LCAP goals.
