Week #5:
Our annual nativity show
"opens" today!
Over 150 Nativities in our Front Window
As we closed the store on Thursday evening, we pulled down the brown paper that covered our window all week to unveil our 2020 nativity collection. Carefully pulling away the final layer of tissue around new nativities as they are first unpacked marks the actual beginning of the holidays for those of us at World's Window. After the exclamations and the smiles at the expressions on the figures, they are carefully placed in the window.
Starting right after Dia de los Muertos, Jan, with the help of her sister Judy, spent 3 to 4 days in the front window creating the entire nativity display. The window became a "canvas" to be filled.
Behind paper-covered glass, Jan carefully placed each nativity so they can be clearly visible through the front window. Judy kept unpacking the sets until the boxes were all empty.
The time spent placing each of the nativities is Jan's own personal time of stepping into the holiday season. It's a time of remembering how artisans from so many countries depict this one common scene in materials native to their own area and with images and dress of their own cultures.
Want a first tour of this year's display? The 5-minute video below is a slow tour through much of the window. Look for nativities made of clay, fabric, stone, seeds, metal, and even orange peels! Welcome to our 2020 Nativity show!
Below are some of Jan's favorites this year. Can you guess what each are made of? Throughout Friday and the weekend Jan and Lonnie will be adding most of this year's collection of nativities to our online store. Sorry, they're not there yet, so if you see something your heart desires, just give us a call at 816-361-2500 and we'll set it aside for you.

New whimsical nativity scenes arrive from Peru each year showing creativity and their celebrations of other cultures. This is the first year we've seen sea turtles in nativities. Also the first year for kitties. And for Baby Jesus to be sleeping on a pineapple. And for a moose and fox to be included. The Hawaiian rooster is super-cute too. Such fun!
The tiniest of nativities are often some of the most intriguing. A matchbox slides open to reveal the nativity inside. Pumpkin seeds, nuts and even pasta combine for a nativity "flower." A nativity in a bottle? Of course. And in a gourd. And, finally, teeny flour paste figures nestle in a tiny basket for a cozy little scene.

Celebrate the start of the winter holidays!
We hope to see you standing outside on our sidewalk choosing the ones that are special to you!

and, speaking of the holidays . . .
There are SO many to celebrate!
Beside the nativities, we have also been unpacking menorahs, candles, dreidels and more for Hanukkah. Beautiful hand-painted candle sets from South Africa arrived for Kwanzaa gatherings. Ornaments fill our wall and tree. Angels of all sizes are gathered in celebration. Advent calendars and boxes are ready for the December count-down.

We'll be sharing more about each of these special holidays in the weeks to come. Together let's celebrate this time of

Wow. It's almost unbelievable that it is all-things-holiday time. Besides the nativities our ornament wall is full and new holiday displays are being added every day. It's a time of uplifting change here at World's Window in the midst of what feels like a week that's "on hold" around our nation.
For me, this year's nativity collection is particularly poignant as almost every one of the nativities had to be chosen from pictures instead of attending shows and meeting with vendors. There was no picking up pieces and studying them, feeling the wood or stone, looking closely at features.
Still, our small Fair Trade companies have been marvelous at sharing pictures and information and continuing to support their artisans in the best ways they can. But somehow, without the in-person contact we value so much with our companies, the unpacking of these treasures became even more surprising and touching. It has been my calm and center this week.
We thank you for your continued shopping support. And I can't say it enough times - YOU are an important part of what makes World's Window so special! THANK YOU! We invite you to enter this wonderful season of holiday celebrations with us.
Thinking of you.
