Mary Alice Baumgardner Retrospective
Throughout the month of May, 2022, Gallery 42 on W. Main Street, Waynesboro, PA, will exhibit art by Mary Alice Baumgardner.
Since it’s a “retrospective art show”, her earliest “work”, a “self-portrait” at age three will be shown. It’s unsigned because she did not know the alphabet at that time. It portrays the young artist: a “potato head”, with three ears and three legs. The second self-portrait was done at Easter, when she was eight years old and obviously had only two legs. Curls cover her “third ear”! Since she had learned cursive writing, this portrait is signed by the artist.
Born in Hagerstown, MD, Mary Alice began studying art at The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, at age 6, under Thomas Danaher. Much later in life, she was privileged to have studied with Lester Jay Stone, of Blue Ridge Summit, PA.
A graduate of Towson High school and Gettysburg College, she received her MA in Studio Arts from Marywood University, with concentration on illustration of children's books.
The variety of styles in this exhibit affirm how the artist loves to experiment with different media and explore new techniques. Mary Alice has written and illustrated five children's books, which will be available for purchase in Gallery 42. There will be a book-signing at the opening reception on May 6, 2022, from 5:30pm-8pm. Her writing has also been published in Guideposts books and “Chicken Soup for the Mother/Daughter Soul”.
Living in the country south of Waynesboro, Mary Alice says: “Stories come to me as I look at our amazing world. Nature speaks to us when we listen, and I love to share what she says to me.” Not only Nature, but People of all ages also inspire this artist to sketch and paint!
A second book signing is also scheduled for Friday evening, May 13, 2022 at Gallery 42 on W. Main Street, Waynesboro, PA from 5:30pm-8pm.
