Employers Offer Virtual Manufacturing Day on October 2
To celebrate National Manufacturing Day on Friday, October 2, Sacramento are employers are offering virtual tours. Over 260 Sacramento-area college and high school students will participate in 13 virtual tours of local advanced manufacturing companies, including:
  • AMW Design
  • Garner Products, Inc.
  • Harris & Bruno International
  • Kratos
  • Siemens Mobility
  • Tri Tool
In Sacramento, educators are working closely with members of SME Sacramento Valley and the Sacramento Valley Manufacturing Initiative (SVMI) to arrange the virtual tours, according to Jeff Briggs, Regional Director, Advanced Manufacturing North Region, California Community Colleges, housed at Sierra College. "Students benefit from seeing work environments and are inspired when they learn about career opportunities from those working in the industry," said Briggs

Project Update
Instructors on Shop Talk Discuss Attracting Women to Manufacturing
On Sept. 8, 2020 over 15 participants shared how they are engaging students remotely, and some of the technology they are using to offer instruction virtually. In addition, the group discussed how to attract women to manufacturing classes and careers. Some of the resources discussed included:

  • JFF has posted recordings of a 2-day virtual institute to provide manufacturing industry leaders with a unique opportunity to learn about best practices for hiring and retaining women. Women in Skilled Manufacturing Apprenticeships & Careers: An Introduction To Equity and Inclusion The event was hosted by JFF's Center for Apprenticeship & Work-Based Learning, Chicago Women in the Trades, and West Virginia Women Work, Inc. It was made possible by an Industry Partner Intermediary contract with the U.S. Department of Labor.

Statewide Advisory Meeting Oct. 16
You are invited to join industry experts at a statewide manufacturing advisory meeting on Oct. 16 to discuss workforce trends, challenges and initiatives in California for developing technicians and ways to close the skill gap. Register to attend.

Both Yuba and Sierra Colleges Offer In-person Manufacturing Labs

Sierra College Begins Renovation to Co-locate Applied Technologies
Sierra College has started construction to renovate the "N" building on campus. As a result, Mechatronics and Drafting and Engineering Support (DES) will relocate to the same facility as Welding and Advanced Manufacturing, making it easier for Applied Technologies students and faculty to collaborate. The project, funded through Strong Workforce, is expected to be complete at the end of the year.
California Mobility Center to Offer Advanced Manufacturing Training
More than $1.4 million in CARES Act funding will be used by the City of Sacramento to launch the California Mobility Center (CMC) Workforce Training Career Pathways Program. It includes job-readiness and technical training for advanced manufacturing jobs that provide higher paying sustainable wages. Over 500 impacted by COVID are expected to be retrained. The CMC will also provide assistance to startups and existing firms with prototyping, testing, digitizing, manufacturing and the commercialization of new products in the clean mobility sector. Pre-Apprenticeship Free for First 60 Qualified Participants
The Charles A. Jones (CAJ) Career and Education Center in Sacramento is offering a Manufacturing Pre-Apprenticeship in partnership with the Sacramento Valley Manufacturing Initiative (SVMI). The training is completely free for the first 60 adult education students who meet all qualifications through December 2020, paid for with Cares Act funding.

EMPLOYERS: SVMI is seeking employers willing to offer a 40 hour internship to substitute for lab experience. For employers, participating connects your firm more closely to prospective employees who have proven an interest in the field by enrolling in the pre-apprenticeship program. Contact Dean Peckham, President, SVMI if your company may be interested in participating.
