SEPTEMBER 2021

SUPERINTENDENT'S VOICE
Newsletter
Nampa School District welcomed back more than 13,800 students on Aug. 19 for in-person instruction.
WELCOME BACK!
Welcome back – we are officially in! We are so grateful for our community, parents, staff and students as we work together to keep all students in school. We want to take a moment to celebrate some of our recent graduates. Here is a quick sample of their exciting next steps:

Ty, a graduate from Nampa High School, is studying political science and exploring theatre at Idaho State University. When Ty transferred to NHS, academics, theatre and cross country were an important part of his life and he is excited to continue pursuing those passions at ISU.

Aimee earned one of 20 spots in the very competitive Vet Tech program at CSI. Graduating from Columbia High School, she is using her experience in FFA leadership and the NSD agriculture program to expand her knowledge to join a career field she loves.

Two of our graduates from Treasure Valley Leadership Academy, Emily and Ashley, are already giving back to the community by volunteering in our classrooms and soon will be substituting for the district.

Donovan graduated from Skyview High School as a National Merit Finalist, four-year cross-country letterman, and SHS band member, among other accomplishments. He left last week to pursue his dream of attending Boston University. He is studying computer science.

Harrison graduated from Nampa High School. In June, he left to serve an LDS mission in Baltimore, Maryland. When he returns in two years, he hopes to pursue a science major – possibly herpetology – at either BYU-Idaho or ISU.

We also have graduates like Jade and Troy, both from Union High School, who currently are in boot camp or will soon report, and are ready to take their first steps in serving our country through one of our military branches.

These graduates demonstrate the investment that our teachers and staff members make in the success of every student, supporting and challenging them to achieve their dreams. Every child comes to NSD with distinct talents, skills and experiences and for that reason NSD provides students and families with a wide range of academic and extracurricular programs and resources. Our staff prepares students to thrive and excel in academics, the arts, athletics and the broader Nampa community.

As NSD works to continue with five days a week in-person instruction, health and safety remains a priority. Thank you for continuing to screen your child each morning and having them stay home if they are running a fever or not feeling well, and when they are waiting for COVID test results. We appreciate your shared commitment to help children practice hand washing and healthy habits around sneezing and nose blowing. Face coverings are encouraged on our campuses while students are inside. Thank you also for doing your part in keeping our students in school – voluntarily choosing to become vaccinated and wearing face coverings as you find yourself in large, indoor gatherings. Together we can, and will, keep our students in school.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns regarding NSD, please feel free to contact me at superintendent@nsd131.org. If you have any questions regarding your specific school, be it about the curriculum, schedules, or facilities, please feel free to contact your building principal.

As we continue forward in this new year, let’s continue to celebrate our incredible 2021 graduates. Their many achievements reflect the enduring partnership between Nampa School District and our community. Thank you for entrusting us with your child’s education. Working together, we can provide every student with extraordinary educational experiences.

Sincerely,

Dr. Paula Kellerer
NSD Superintendent
Those Crazy Days of Summer

Summer is a busy time at the Nampa School District. While most students enjoy time away from school, many others take advantage of summer school to recover credits or get ahead. Administrative personnel work on district initiatives and major maintenance projects that can't be done during the regular school year. Both staff and students are regularly recognized for excellence. Watch this video to see what we did on our summer vacation!
Celebrating Kindness
Thursdays are Kindness Days this year! If you’d like to help spread the fun community-wide, there are two ways to participate:

1. Be extra kind to everyone you meet on Thursdays.
2. Wear “Be Kind” or other kindness-themed shirts on Thursdays.

Volunteer Spotlight – Kiwanis Club of Nampa
How do you keep kids engaged and focused? One way is to provide physical activities that allow them to be active and have fun.

Thanks to volunteers from the Kiwanis Club of Nampa, students at Central Elementary and Iowa Elementary are now able to get their wiggles out during recess or when they have trouble focusing in class by following the fitness/sensory paths painted in bright primary colors on their playgrounds.

Volunteers spent several hours in August painting stencils depicting various exercises and activities ranging from tiptoe walking to yoga. These focused activities promote benefits ranging from brain development to cognitive growth and self-awareness.

The project was spearheaded by Kiwanis Past-President Kenny Wroten, working with his employer Mountain West Bank, NSD Federal Programs Director Heidi Rahn, Family and Community Resource Center Coordinator Mari Ramos and school principals. Once they settled on an outdoor project, he put the wheels in motion, calling on the youth-focused Kiwanis club for support.

“I brought the project to the Kiwanis Board and was granted approval and a budget,” he said. “One of our board members has a contact at St. Luke’s, who lent us their stencils to use and saved us hundreds of dollars.”

The project was organized in the days just before school started, allowing hundreds of kids to enjoy them for the first day of class.
Come Work for Us
Nampa School District is hiring substitute teachers and lunchroom workers. In addition, Brown Bus Company is looking for people willing to drive regular school bus routes or after-school activity routes. Training is provided.

All these positions are critical in keeping school doors open, but the district is experiencing an unprecedented shortage of applicants, largely due to COVID concerns and the current economic situation.
