President's Message

Dear Rotarians,

This coming week we will be hearing from the Leavenworth Rotary club and the planning efforts to-date for this spring’s District 5060 Conference. The dates are May 18-21st.

Here are five good reasons to attend:

  1. It will open your eyes to the bigger world of Rotary.
  2. You will make new friends.
  3. You will come back to our club energized and enthused.
  4. Leavenworth is fun!
  5. Leavenworth is close!

I set a goal at the beginning of my presidency to have five of our members attend District Conference.  I invite you to consider being one of those five.

Yours in Rotary,

Guy Evans

ps. Be sure to checkout the website for the conference, Very inspiring!

Foundation Moment - Rotary Direct

Last year, the Foundation raised over $434 million and funded more than 1,190 global grants, 470 district grants, and 225 disaster response grants to help communities thrive.

Rotary Direct is one of the easiest and most secure ways for donors to support the Foundation; because contributions are automated, donors don’t need to worry about sending checks or remembering to make an annual contribution on time.

Rotary Direct saves time and reduces administrative costs. Monthly, quarterly, and annual gift options are available. Members can enroll at the Rotary Direct page, return a completed Rotary Direct enrollment form, or enroll by phone by calling the international office at 866-976-8279.

Bring a Friend to Rotary

January 31, 2023 was Lake Chelan Rotary - "bring a friend to Rotary day".

Many members decided to bring a friend to the meeting and were treated to a program focused on "Youth Service". Short presentations where made outlining some of the work Rotary does, specifically: scholarships. Buzz on Biz, Interact and youth Exchange.

In reality most of what our club does has a youth service focus including District Grants for example: the Plant Walk, Singleton Park and the Community Center.

New Members

A last weeks meeting two new members where inducted into Rotary.

Kim Dunbar, aided and abetted by President Guy Evans inducted Aaron Edwards and Ray Eickmeyer into Rotary.

Graduation

There are presently seven Brighter Futures Students at university. Three of them will. graduate in 2022/2023. The first is Tampul Jane Sesoi, known to us as Jane. She describes herself as a dedicated, professional and determined to make a difference.

Jane comes from a humble family with six siblings. Her parents are small scale subsistence farmers. Jane is the only member of her family to go to university. Unfortunately, she was sent home because she was unable to pay the university fees and housing. This is when Rotary stepped in.

Jane received a Bachelor's Degree in education, mathematics and business. Her goal is to continue and get her Masters.

Iltumaro Progress - Staff Housing

The new staff housing is nearing completion. The new housing will consist of four individual suits each having two bedrooms and a sitting room/kitchen. A major improvement over the existing housing.

Teachers are assigned to a school by the government. In rural schools teacher have to live at the school and until they arrive they have no idea what to expect.

Gates Notes - Adaption & Innovation

In Kenya, I visited with a smallholder farmer using new tools and practices to fight back against climate change.

I planted drought-tolerant seeds, fed and weighed chickens, and used a mobile phone to monitor weather forecasts and local crop prices. These were a few of the chores I was given during my visit with Mary Mathuli, a smallholder farmer in rural Kenya.

I arrived expecting to hear her talk about the record droughts and smaller harvests many farmers are experiencing throughout Africa. Instead, to my surprise, she led me out to her fields to show off the innovations that are allowing her to continue to grow crops and earn an income despite the drastic changes in rainfall and weather patterns. She put me to work so I could understand how these new agricultural inputs and practices can make a big difference in their lives.

This experience taught me a couple important lessons. First, my farming skills—like holding a chicken and swinging a hoe—need some work. Second, and more importantly, I got a personal reminder of how resourceful and resilient African smallholder farmers like Mary are. Battered by years of drought and other extreme weather patterns, they are developing new skills and embracing new technologies to adapt to some of the toughest conditions for growing crops and raising livestock.

While more innovation is needed to help Africa’s smallholder farmers keep pace with the threats posed by climate change, Mary and other farmers in Kenya are adopting some incredible new tools and practices that can limit crop losses and help their farms thrive even in extreme weather: Chickens - Our first stop at Mary’s farm was her chicken coop, where she promptly handed me a large hen to hold. Chickens serve as a kind of hedge against climate risks because they can provide a reliable source of income, even in times of extreme weather. She sells eggs and the adult chickens for meat at her local market.

Drought-tolerant seed -  Next, we walked out to Mary’s fields, where she handed me bags of improved seeds that can handle extreme weather conditions. Mary uses drought-tolerant maize seeds and bean seeds, which she invited me to plant with her. I helped her dig a square planting pit, about a foot deep, which conserves rainwater. Then we dropped in the seeds, covered them with soil, watered them, and added a thin layer of straw on top to help provide some protection from the heat.

I was impressed by Mary’s entrepreneurial spirit and her optimism. She appeared to seize every opportunity to try out new technologies and agricultural practices. It’s one of the reasons why she was trained as a model farmer and Village Based Advisor. In this role, Mary provides guidance to several hundred farmers in her community, showing them how to use drought-tolerant seeds, raise chickens, and adopt other climate adaptation agricultural strategies. She is clearly doing a good job in this role because more than 90 percent of farmers in her area have embraced one of the new adaptation practices.

Plant-Based Cookbook Fundraiser - Share Your Recipes

The Rotary Club of the Rivers is working on a fundraiser by compiling an International Plant Based Cookbook, and Lake Chelan Rotary is invited to get involved. As we know, Rotarians are People of Action, and to sustain our community leaders to keep the Rotary gear moving, this cookbook will contain nutrient-dense “food as fuel” recipes.

They are looking to showcase delicious and nutritious recipes coming from the perspective of food as medicine. They would like to collect recipes from as many Rotary clubs as possible in order to put together a recipe collection in a book, which will also highlight the contributing Rotary Club Member and recipe author.

Sales and distribution of this excellent reference book will be through third parties such as the Rivers Club and Lake Chelan Rotary Club, with 1/3 of the proceeds staying with the club that sold the book. This provides a fundraising opportunity for other clubs and is the same distribution model Kamloops West Rotary uses for their well-established Golf Card community fundraiser.

Plans are to sell the book for around $30, so each club would keep $10/ book. Please email Rivers Club Co-Chair Diane Golchert if you have questions or to submit your favorite plant-based recipe at dgolchert@shaw.ca.

The Rotary Club of the Rivers is online the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month at 5pm PT/8pm ET.

All are welcome and encouraged to join on Zoom:
