What does ESG do?

Engineering Student Government serves several roles. Examples of the work we do include sponsoring events, implementing new academic policies, and improving sustainability efforts. At its core, ESG works to improve student life at the University of Michigan and is committed to making your voices heard. See some of our recent updates  below!

Coming up next from ESG

The College of Engineering has always been a place where I could learn and grow both academically and socially, and I joined ESG to ensure future students feel the same. Throughout my past two years as a Senator, I have tried to make ESG more transparent. As part of the Academic Affairs Committee, I helped implement the What To Fix feedback system, and on the Funding Committee I crafted a document that explains our funding guidelines. This year I'll mainly be working with the Math department to get a Gateway lab on North Campus and to create a math double major for engineers. I'm excited for all we have accomplished and will accomplish this year, and I hope my work benefits students for years to come.

Student Life Committee

The Student Life committee has been working hard to put together events for the Engineering community. We have tabling events at least once a month with free food and information about our current initiatives so we can better serve the student body. We are listening to your suggestions, and all ESG events will now include tea! Additionally, we are always trying to incorporate healthy and sustainable options at our events such as fresh fruit and zero-waste options. If you are interested in joining, please contact Meredith Allen (merallen@umich.edu).

Academic Affairs Committee

The Academic Affairs committee has focused their efforts on revising ESG's governing documents. These revisions include changes to the election code and senatorial procedures, as well as general edits for clarity. Please see these revisions on the ballot during our November elections! If you have questions or would like to join AAC, please contact Hannah Leszczynski (esg.president@umich.edu).

Graduate Student Affairs Committee

The Graduate Student Affairs Committee (GSAC) is meant to provide a space for graduate students to voice their concerns and propose resolutions that benefit the College of Engineering community! This semester, the committee is focused on cultivating community among graduate student organizations within the College of Engineering.

Sustainability Committee

The Sustainability Committee promotes awareness and adoption of sustainable practices across the College of Engineering. These include reusable container programs, composting, recycling, increased energy efficiency, and other effective options. If you are a member of an org which serves food at meetings, use this link to request FREE, ZERO-WASTE materials. We're also developing a quick and easy messaging app to send mass messages about leftover FREE FOOD from events on North Campus. Fill out this poll to indicate interest in this initiative and a prime location for dropping off/picking up leftovers. Finally, our committee is hosting a CATERED SUSTAINABILITY MOVIE NIGHT on Friday, November 15th, 7-9pm in 1180 Dude.

The goal of the ESG mentorship program is to facilitate meaningful connections and friendship between students in the College of Engineering. This program will be all-encompassing with all degrees and degree levels and include a diverse group of people with a common interest. It is a great way to learn new things and meet new people who were once in your shoes or are where you want to be in the future! By focusing on topics outside of academics, the mentors and mentees can have a 1-on-1 relationship with room for growth and personal connection. We hope to give our large college a smaller feel by helping students narrow down interests and navigate life as a U of M student.

Program requirements:
  • Be a student in the College of Engineering
  • Be able to meet with (physically or remotely) your mentor/mentee at least once a month
  • Attend at least one ESG sponsored mentorship event
  • Failure to communicate with your corresponding mentor/mentee will result in removal from the program. The other party will be subsequently re-paired.
Please fill out this form with your interests and information so that we can pair you with your mentor/mentee! The deadline to apply is November 1st. After that we will be making our pairings and sending out more information.
