Q: What is your favorite course you have taken in the college?

My favorite course is Fiction and Development, PSY 4613, with Dr. Jennifer Barnes. Dr. Barnes is an amazing professor whose passion for fictional stories and developmental research is truly inspiring. I've learned so much about the impacts of fiction on the development of humans simply through reading research. I look forward to attending this class because of the stress-free environment that Dr. Barnes is able to create through meaningful discussions. This class has provided me with knowledge I know I can take into any of my future endeavors!

Q: What do you love about the college?

I absolutely love the people within the Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences. As a Withrow Leadership Scholar, I have been able to see the diversity within our college and am amazed at the wide range of passions that each student holds. I feel like I am constantly learning about a major or a scientific/humanistic perspective that I had never considered before. The faculty, staff and students within the college continuously show care and support for one another!

Q: What led you to choose your current degree plan?

I did not come to OU with my current degree plan, but circumstances led me into having to make a change. I chose psychology and sociology because I have always been interested in people, their motivations and their relationships. I found that the classes sparked curiosity and a desire to continue learning in me. Beyond that, this degree plan will help me pursue my passion of reducing the stigma around mental health in marginalized communities as well as providing resources to under-served populations. I plan to invest in my community and my degree plan leads me to fulfill that plan.

Q: How are you prioritizing yourself during this busy semester?

I always set time within the week that I spend on what I need most, whether that's alone time or spending quality time with my friends and family. When things get hectic, this pre-determined time helps me through the stress. I also keep a bullet journal that I make sure to update each week. This helps me manage my time and have a balance between academics, extracurriculars and personal matters.

Faculty Spotlight: Milos Savic

saviic.jpeg

Milos Savic was born and raised in the Chicagoland area and received his B.S. in mathematics from Ball State University in 2004. After receiving my B.S., Savic spent a semester teaching Pre-Calculus at the University of Hawaii and a year teaching Algebra at McKinley High School in Honolulu, Hawaii. Savic received his doctorate at NMSU. In 2013, he became a tenure-track professor at the University of Oklahoma in the Mathematics Department. Finally, in 2018, Savic achieved tenure and promotion to Associate Professor.

What is your teaching style like? How do you bring creativity to your teaching?

I would describe my teaching as humanistic. I encourage discussion, advocate for anti-competitiveness, and strive for equity in the classroom. If you were to walk in, you would see students creating and solving their own problems, explaining to each other their work, and joking about math. I also have an art exhibit every semester where students create art that represents their problem-solving process in math. All of this culminates in seeing more of the human aspect of mathematics and hopefully reshaping students’ math identities.

What is the most rewarding part of being a professor in the math department?

100% students – particularly when they are successful within their definitions of success. When a student has an AHA moment in class, or when students help each other grow mathematically, I feel rewarded. I also am lucky to be surrounded by faculty who put students’ growth first, and we have weekly seminars that we discuss ways that we can improve our own teaching. Finally, OU’s math department is quite unique – we have a Ph.D. program in my research area, Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education (RUME). There are few RUME programs in the country, so this is another rewarding aspect of being a professor in the department.
