March 2021
Dear Colleagues,

It is hard to believe that a year has passed since the pandemic began. While there have been many challenges and I mourn the tremendous loss of life, I am grateful for the bright moments of truth and inspiration. I have never felt more proud to be a part of the faculty at UCSF and have been humbled by the tremendous work of our students, trainees, staff and faculty in addressing the pandemic. Meeting its challenges has only reinforced the importance of interprofessional collaboration to address the healthcare needs of our community. It has also strengthened our commitment to preparing our learners with the knowledge and skills they need to collaborate effectively with other healthcare professionals.

I am excited about the growth of interprofessional educational opportunities for our learners in clinical settings and the fact that we have been able to develop these efforts even in the face of the pandemic. I look forward to the upcoming year and the promise it holds for advancing interprofessional education and collaborative practice.

Sincerely,
Maria Wamsley
Supported by a PIPE Interprofessional Clinical Opportunities grant, co-course creators Roseanne Krauter, BSN, MSN, FNP, and Nina Zhao, MD, MAEd, piloted the Interprofessional Voice, Airway, Swallowing elective in fall 2020. The elective was an immersive and engaging one. Second-year nurse practitioner students were paired with third-year medical students in a one-to-two-week rotation where they shadowed the different professions, who are all uniquely involved in a patient’s care. more
To engage newer interprofessional educators, the PIPE Interprofessional Teaching Observation Program (iTOP) provides support by pairing trained observers who conduct teaching observations with interested participants.

“As a doctoral student in nursing, I’m interested in growing as a leader, facilitator, and educator. I highly recommend taking advantage of this resource,” said Bethany Geleris, CRNP, a current doctoral student in the UCSF Nursing Practice program and nurse practitioner in Pediatric Urology. more
