Building affordable homes in
Nez Perce and Asotin Counties since 1991
April 2023
Director's Message
Habitat for Humanity is propelled by a vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. We devote ourselves to creating that world because we believe everyone — every single one of us, regardless of who we are or where we come from — deserves a decent life and deserves the opportunity for a better future.

This year, we commemorate the 55th anniversary of the passage of the Fair Housing Act, the landmark civil rights law signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson on April 11, 1968, that made discrimination in housing transactions unlawful.

The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of dwellings because of race, color, religion, sex, familial status, national origin, and disability.

We honor our vision by building affordable houses — and through those houses, the strength, stability and self-reliance that ALL families need in order to achieve a better life.

For more information about your fair housing rights, visit FHEO's website.

Home is the Key
It is time for our annual Home is the Key (HITK) fundraiser. This is our third year participating in this campaign, and we are looking to make it even bigger and better than last year!

During the month of April, businesses throughout the LC Valley ask patrons to support LC Valley Habitat for Humanity through the "purchase" of paper houses (similar to Shamrocks from March of
Dimes) in different denominations or round up their total as a donation. Even your spare change can add up to big changes in affordable housing.

All donations stay right here in the valley to help us achieve our vision that everyone has a decent place to live.

Please take the time to stop by these sponsor locations to show them your support and make your donation to Home is the Key.

Construction Update on
Habit Home #35
Mark and Dave from 3C's Construction joined us on the build site to set the carport beams. We now also have most of the carport trusses set. The house looking great!

Our upcoming steps include completing the trusses, adding over-framing to tie the roof sections together, and sheeting the roof to get it dried in.

The Lewiston Orchards Fire Department will be volunteering in late April to assist us with installing the roofing materials. Be sure to check out our May newsletter to see all of our progress on the house!

We are always seeking volunteers for all stages of construction. If you are interested in joining us on the build site, click here or call our office at 509-758-7396.
Calling all 2022 and 2023 Volunteers!
We want to show you how much you mean to our organization with a special BBQ on April 22nd. Stop by the ReStore, grab a burger, and say hi!

Are you looking for somewhere to volunteer?
We'd love to share our programs and opportunities with you.

Clarkston Affordable Home Repair (CAHR) Update
Before: Wavy, peeling roof & crumbling chimney
After: New roof & gutters, chimney removed
David is a 75-year old Veteran who purchased his home through the VA in October 2016. Since that time, he completed several home repair or upgrade projects. But, he reached a point where he could not do the “big stuff” either physically or financially. His roof desperately needed replacing, and his electrical needed an upgrade. He describes the former electrical in the basement as a “spaghetti mess of old wires.”

The Habitat for Humanity team replaced the roof, all the way down to the trusses. The dangerous chimney was removed to below the roof line and gutters were either repaired or replaced. New electrical work was installed in the basement and pulled into the attic. To read David’s complete story and the stories of other Clarkston Affordable Home Repair Projects, please click here.

All in all, David can’t say enough about the Clarkston Affordable Home Repair Program, stating, "The program helped me immensely, making my home warmer and safer."
At this time, we are in the process of completing our final projects around Clarkston. We reached the end of our grant funding for the CAHR program and are no longer taking applications. We hope to see renewed funding soon and be able to restart the program in the fall.

Seeking Women Build Sponsors
We are looking for sponsor-partners for our
2nd Annual Women Build event!

L-C Valley Habitat for Humanity Women Build (WB) is a Habitat for Humanity initiative designed to engage, educate and empower women to transform lives and strengthen communities by providing safe and affordable homes for families in need.

Women Build 2022 makes a difference by uplifting and empowering women while building an affordable home. Traditionally, many women have not worked in the trades. Now, there are women who break that stereotype, who defy norms, and deserve to be celebrated. Women Build is not designed to exclude men; it is to empower those with opportunities they may have not experienced.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR:
L-C Valley Habitat for Humanity (LCV HFH) will host Corks for a Cause as the official kickoff event for our Women Build 2023, to be held on Thursday, May 18, 2023 from 6pm - 9pm. The event will be held at Lindsay Creek Vineyards, 3107 Powers Avenue in Lewiston

Join us for a fun evening with music and appetizers during our Corks for a Cause kickoff. During this event guests will have an opportunity to learn more about Women Build 2022 from various speakers and presenters. There will also be students, who have graduated with certificates in the trades, sharing their stories.

Our goal is to raise $30,000 to support the build of our 35th Habitat home through Women Build 2022. We offer the option of event sponsorships, donations, or scholarship for local students to participate in Women Build at the build site.
Help us reach our Women Build 2023 goal by becoming a sponsor, registering for the event, or providing a WB scholarship TODAY!

Earth Day is Everyday!
When we think of Earth Day activities, immediately things like energy and water conservations, planting trees, cleaning up litter, and recycling come to mind.

Did you know you can also help protect and preserve the planet by donating to local thrift stores like the Habitat ReStore?
Thanks to the generosity of the LC Valley, the Lewiston ReStore diverted 202 tons from local landfills and 1000 tons over the last 5 years. That is 2 MILLION pounds in 5 years! Your couch, dining table, washing machine, or leftover building materials may not seem like much, but we guarantee that it all adds up to make a huge impact.

To create an online pickup request or see what items we do not accept, click here or call 208.743.1300. We also accept donation drop offs Tuesday - Friday 9am-5:30pm and Saturday 9am-4pm.
THANK YOU for your
in-kind donations:
