Keeping Up With the Collections: Highlighting Women's Suffrage

We Moved!
We've left downtown Ithaca for the much more accessible Finger Lakes Library System building on Dryden Road. We'll save on rent and you won't have to pay for parking when you visit our Digitization Lab! See below for the list of new digitization equipment free for you to use.

As we ease back into normalcy, I thought I'd share the comprehensive list of digitization equipment free for you to use in Ithaca and in some cases, available for borrowing:
Grants & Assistance

These awards of up to $20,000 are for cultural organizations facing financial hardship as a result of the pandemic. Funding comes from NEH and the federal American Rescue Plan Act. Apply by July 9.

Have a public-facing humanities project idea for 2022? Apply for funding of $1,500 to $10,000. The deadline is in October, so you have time to brainstorm.

Documentary Heritage and Preservation Services for New York has open applications now through Friday, July 16 for getting these free and valuable services from them:
  • Archival Needs Assessments: An excellent way to examine your archival program holistically through an external lens.
  • Preservation Surveys: A general evaluation of your institution's preservation needs, pinpointing areas of concern and recommendations.
  • Strategic Planning Assistance: Think proactively about the future and shape a three-year plan to serve as a road map for future decision-making under a trained facilitator.
  • Condition Surveys: A valuable tool for institutions that have received a Preservation Survey (through DHPSNY or another program) and are looking to evaluate the conditions of collection materials on a more granular level.
Happening in the Neighborhood

THC has a phenomenal list of events and displays as part of their women's history exhibit. From documentaries to printing workshops, digital collections to physical exhibits, there's a huge amount of fascinating history to explore this month!

New Website for Greater Oneonta Historical Society
Check out this beautiful new website for GOHS! You can sign up for their summer walking tours and explore their digital exhibits and collections.

Fenimore has a fabulous slate of events for all ages around their Keith Haring: Radiant Art exhibit, on view through September 6, and thanks to a generous sponsor, kids under 19 are free for the exhibit.

Chair Caning Tutorials
Yates County Historical Society has a ton of great videos on Vimeo, including a two part tutorial for caning a chair. Check it out, and consider what local crafts you could show off!

#EmpoweringArchives Webinars
During International Archives Week 2021 (June 7–11), the International Council on Archives (ICA) held several webinars aimed at increasing public awareness of the importance of records and archives by discussing projects and initiatives around digitization, advocacy, accountability and transparency, and diversity. Watch the webinars via ICA's YouTube channel.

This panel webinar from the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries has great ideas for collaborating with teachers and reaching young students. Register at the link to see the recording.

MARAC, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference, welcomes submissions for their annual finding aid award. "The Finding Aids Award Committee will award a prize honoring online publications, including virtual exhibitions, web sites and web pages devoted to the promotion and use of archival materials, created by individuals or institutions in the MARAC region." You might win $250 for having an awesome finding aid published in this last year - so submit your best work!
