CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Week of March 12, 2023

LANE REDUCTION ON NORTHBOUND CEDAR AVENUE

Starting as early as this Friday, March 10, crews will place temporary concrete barriers, also known as k-rail, along northbound (NB) Cedar Avenue between Orange Street and the westbound (WB) I-10 off-ramp. This activity is in preparation for crews to begin partial demolition and widening of the east side of the Cedar Avenue bridge over I-10 and the railroad tracks. Once k-rail is placed:

  • NB Cedar Avenue will be reduced to one through lane (with access to the eastbound (EB) I-10 on-ramp), and one dedicated left turn lane onto the WB I-10 on-ramp.
  • Drivers will not be able to turn right onto NB Cedar Avenue from Orange Street. Additional details are provided below.

Crews are also planning to reduce lanes on southbound (SB) Cedar Avenue over I-10 and the railroad tracks later this month. SB Cedar Avenue will have one dedicated right turn lane onto the westbound I-10 on-ramp, one through lane, and one dedicated left turn lane onto the eastbound I-10 on-ramp.

This configuration will be in place for approximately one year while crews work to widen the east side of the Cedar Avenue bridge.

RIGHT TURN RESTRICTION:

ORANGE STREET TO NORTHBOUND CEDAR AVENUE

As early as this Friday, March 10, motorists on Orange Street will be prohibited from making a right turn onto NB Cedar Avenue.

This configuration will be place for approximately one year wile crews work to widen the east side of the Cedar Avenue bridge. The recommended detour route is shown in green on the map below.

CEDAR AVENUE BRIDGE RECONSTRUCTION

AND LANE REDUCTION

The Cedar Avenue Bridge over the I-10 and the railroad tracks will be widened in two stages. Crews are tentatively scheduled to partially demolish the east side of the bridge in May 2023 and will work to reconstruct and widen this portion of the bridge through approximately December 2023.

Prior to partial demolition, traffic will be shifted onto the west half of the bridge to allow crews to perform this work. To accommodate this shift, Cedar Avenue will be reduced by one lane in each direction between Orange Street and Valley Boulevard. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes, including Slover Avenue or Valley Boulevard to Riverside Avenue to the east and Sierra Avenue to the west. Traffic delays should be expected during bridge reconstruction, please allow extra time to reach your destination and use caution when traveling through work zones. While the east side of the bridge is under construction, pedestrian access will be maintained across the west side of the bridge.

Once reconstruction of the east side of the bridge is completed in late-2023, crews will then perform bridge widening along the west side, tentatively scheduled to begin in early-2024.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The I-10/Cedar Avenue Interchange Project is designed to relieve congestion, enhance safety, and improve traffic operations along Cedar Avenue between Bloomington Avenue and Orange Street. The project will widen the I-10 overcrossing and replace the railroad bridge, provide for roadway improvements along Cedar Avenue, and add capacity to the on- and off-ramps from Cedar Avenue to the I-10. During construction activities may include removing and rebuilding of existing and new structures, digging up roads for utility work, pavement and restriping work, installation of new traffic signals, traffic shifts, intermittent lane closures, and ramp closures. Workers and heavy equipment will be present throughout the project corridor and we ask that you allow for extra time to reach your destination as you may experience delays.

Please remember construction is dynamic and the schedule is subject to change.
