Heavy Body Acrylics vs Acrylic Fluids

Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
This BobBlast is short and sweet - and informative - demo to explain a question that comes up a lot… Should I use Heavy Body Acrylic or Fluid Acrylic Paint?

I like having choices, and yes, I paint with both. There are advantages to both and I will do a short demo using both types of paint. I am using Holbein Acrylic Paint for this BobBlast.

Heavy Body Artist Acrylic Paint is used straight out of the tube or jar. It is a rich, thick pigment that can be thinned with water to flow easier. It has a viscosity like an oil paint - so, if not thinned, you can use a palette knife technique to paint. Depending on the amount of water you add, the heavy body paint runs the gamut from thick to thin. It still holds up because it is a full pigment paint.

The Fluid Acrylics are similar in their pigment load - but they can be treated like a watercolor. The end result is also permanent. Like all acrylic paints, Fluid acrylics dry with the same intensity as when they were when wet. Because the Fluid Acrylics are low viscosity, I often mix them into the heavy body acrylics. As I mentioned, I paint with both. They mix seamlessly with all acrylic paints, including mediums. 

I am also asked about using Open Acrylics. Open Acrylics may be confusing. Simply said, Open Acrylics are a retarding, slow-drying acrylic paint. May take weeks to dry!
