QR Code Tutorial

We would like to introduce you to the QR Code! You may have seen these square pixilated looking images at a restaurant and used one to pull up a menu. If you have used them before, then you know how nice they are for being able to get directly to the information you want. If you have not used one before, below is a short "how to" tutorial so that you are able to use them. They will soon be on our flyers and brochures.

Step 1

On your iPhone or Smartphone find the "camera" icon and tap on it to open your camera (just like you were going to take a picture)

Step 2

Point your camera at the square so that it is centered in the camera (similar to what you would do if you were taking a picture of someone). No need to actually take a picture. Just hold the camera over the square.

Step 3

A rectangle banner image will display at the top of your camera screen that says, "Website QR Code". Tap on that banner. The webpage will then open with the information you want.

Step 4 - Time to practice. Follow the steps above using the QR Code below!

“Take Two” – an art exhibition in the John D. Spreckels Center

Back in late February 2020 four local artists were featured in an exhibition in the John D. Spreckels Center Gallery – Susan Bartsch, Doris Besikof, Phil Martin and Carol Young. Over 125 people attended a reception to meet the artists, view the show and enjoy an evening of arts and entertainment. Sadly, two weeks later our world changed and due to a world-wide pandemic, the John D. Spreckels Center closed to the public. The Cultural Arts Commission and the center were hopeful to reopen however after a year a decision was made to take down the exhibition.

In June 2021, Spreckels Center reopened, and a decision was made to try again. Invitations were extended to the four artists to “Take Two.” Three of the artists accepted the invitation and in fact had been busy during the pandemic creating new art. Doris Besikof, Phil Martin and Carol Young will once again be featured in the Spreckels Gallery, 1019 Seventh Street. The exhibition is up and available for viewing by the public during center open hours (M-F 8 a.m.-4 p.m.) with many of their pieces available for purchase.

Join us for a complimentary Artist Reception

An evening of Art and Entertainment is scheduled for Thursday, September 23 from 6 -8 p.m. Come enjoy music, food and libations and meet the artists. In addition, there will be other local artists that evening with their art on display for sale. Look for an invitation to this event in the next few weeks and let’s all “Take Two” and celebrate local art and artists as we reemerge from this pandemic.

FAQ...

Q. I like to knit with others. When can I do that?

A. Warm Up America, a group of knitters, meets at the Spreckels Center on the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 10-11am. Come knit, or crochet to donate to organizations in need. Warm Up America! Foundation (WUA!) is a non-profit organization that donates knit and crochet blankets and accessories to a variety of people in need. Volunteers work together to craft blanket panels, join them, organize them, and ship them to organizations that help others.

Q. Where can I find a list of ALL Spreckels programs?

A. The Spreckels Center uses two main communication pathways for promoting programs. The first is the Fall/Winter brochure which lists free and paid programs from September through January 2022. The second is this newsletter where newly added events, classes and activities are listed. Please help us spread the word by telling friends and neighbors that we are open and there are many activities and programs to enjoy, some with no fees.
