DEI Practices of Non-profit Corporate Boards

Harvard Law School Forum on Corporate Governance shared results from an August 2020 study that examined the DEI board practices of some 200 companies (91% public and 9% private). One of the findings that I think can be particulary helpful to independent school board chairs was the question,

"What information does management provide to the board on company practices, strategy, and performance related to diversity and inclusion?"

Here are the responses:
  • 63% Overall diversity and inclusion strategy and progress against that strategy
  • 59% Diversity metrics (e.g., leadership and workforce representation, recruitment strategies, customer diversity, supplier diversity)
  • 41% Inclusion metrics (e.g., engagement survey results, findings from exit interviews)
  • 33% Employment metrics (e.g., pay and benefits, promotion inequities, attrition inequities)
  • 13% No information is provided to the board
  • 3% Other

We can look at this list above an easily adapt those metrics into independent school lingo. Can you list what DEI metrics you ask your administration to provide to your board? This list above, adapted to an independent school environment, could be a good starting point for a conversation with your board.
