Greetings, Community Partners –

I hope all is well.

Lone Star College-Houston North is a comprehensive college which means we offer both academic transfer courses (what is often referred to as the basics) and workforce courses (which are often referred to as the ā€œtradesā€). During this past week, our campus researcher provided some basic research to show us the general demographic information for a workforce student at Lone Star College-Houston North.

A few of the findings are below.

  • Average age of a workforce student is 30.6.
  • Approximately 6 out of 10 workforce students are female.
  • The students are more likely to be returning to college after taking some time off.
  • About ½ of the students are on Pell.

Our researcher also found that within our LSC-Houston North zip codes, there are a lot of for-profit institutions that may be appealing to this student group. In addition, according to our Associate Dean of Workforce, many students in our service area may associate workforce more with for-profits and not fully understand the extensive offerings we have at Lone Star College. Therefore, while it is generally my goal for all individuals within our communities to gain an education or training, I do want to point out some of the advantages to attending Lone Star College-Houston North in comparison to many of the for-profits within the area.

  • The courses are significantly cheaper. For instance, a student can earn a Welding Level 1 certificate for less than $2000. A similar set of classes at one of the local for-profit schools costs over $16,000.

  • Lone Star College is accredited which means that the credits will transfer into a Lone Star College Associate Degree or even into the college’s new Bachelor of Applied Technology degree (or other similar Bachelor programs across the state).

  • Lone Star College constantly reviews programs to ensure that is a job demand. If labor market data shows that there are no jobs within the Gulf Coast region, LSC will not continue a program.

  • Lone Star College has over 20 locations with over 200 associates degree and certificate programs across the greater Houston area which makes it convenient for students. Note that four of those locations are part of LSC-Houston North.

  • Lone Star College has flexible classes including days, evenings, weekends, online (when applicable) and even shorter semester lengths such as the 8-week classes at LSC-Houston North.

  • Lone Star College is a proven institution. With over 40 years of service to the Greater Houston Area, there is no risk of the institution being shut down as have happened multiple times with for-profit institutions in the area.
