SUMMER 2021 THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Five things to know about the summer program at The Dogwood School:
  1. Our summer program is open to children ages two through six.
  2. The program will run Monday through Thursday from July 5th through August 19th.
  3. There is a two-week minimum to enroll. Weeks do not need to be consecutive.
  4. You can sign up for two or four days and may choose half or full days. The half-day program runs from 8:30-12:30, and the full-day program runs from 8:30-3:00.
  5. Our program will take place in our outdoor classrooms. Each week will have a different theme.
COUNTDOWN TO KINDERGARTEN
In addition to our regular camp themes, we will also offer Countdown to Kindergarten during the last three weeks of camp (August 2nd - August 19th) for children entering kindergarten in September. You may sign up for any of the weeks; however, you must attend all four days of the week. You may choose half or full-days.
Weekly Themes
Insects and Spiders
(July 5th-8th)

Did you know that butterflies have taste buds on their feet? From tiny larvae to beautiful butterflies, we will explore concepts of change and growth as we build on children's curiosity about the world around them. Our summer gardens will provide a living laboratory for exploration and fun!
Reptiles and Amphibians
(July 12th-15th)

Can you tell the difference between a frog and a toad? How about a crocodile and an alligator? These slippery and semiaquatic animals are often  intriguing to children. This week we will explore various reptiles, their habitats, and exciting facts about these cold-blooded creatures.
Amazing Artists
(July 19th-22nd)

This week we learn about famous artists! We'll take a look at the work of Van Gogh, Monet and Kandinsky. Close observation is a skill, and noticing details will begin to inform our own experiments with color, shape and style.

Painting Their Way
(July 26th-29th)

Let's get messy! Painting offers children a rich opportunity to express themselves. We will focus on the process rather than the finished product and engage children by using all sorts of mediums. Rocks, wood, sticks and stones will all be our canvas.
Read to Me
(August 2nd -5th)

Reading aloud to children is one of the best things we can do to help develop a lifelong love of reading. This week's focus will be on reading quality children's literature that has underlying messages about kindness and empathy. A special activity will accompany each story to help build meaning and comprehension.
Sensory Nation
(August 9th -12th)

Whether your child avoids or gravitates to various textures, there will be room to experiment this week. We will inspire their curiosity by making fun concoctions including dough, clay, slime and mud. Expect a messy and hands on experience!
Everyday Math
(August 16th-19th)

Math and science are everywhere- especially in our Dogwood gardens! This week we will take a closer look at our growing herb and vegetable garden. We will count plants and measure growth. We'll measure liquids as we water our flowers and feed hummingbirds. We'll learn about the variability of outdoor temperatures in the sun versus shade.
 Countdown to Kindergarten
Rising kindergarteners will have a schedule similar to a typical kindergarten classroom. Our focus each week will be on reading, writing, or math. Children may sign up for one, two, or three weeks. They must attend all four days, but can choose half or full days.
