COVID-19 TESTING AND TRANSPORTATION UPDATES
|
|
Dear Bellevue School District Families:
COVID-19 Testing in Bellevue School District
In the upcoming weeks, the Bellevue School District will begin offering COVID-19 screening and diagnostic testing at our schools. Doing so will allow us to more rapidly determine infections in our buildings and take a proactive approach to minimizing potential outbreaks. Testing will be optional, but highly encouraged as we work to keep our students, staff and BSD community safe. District administration is currently in the process of finalizing the procedures, permission requirements for testing, and other details, which will be shared as they are available.
Please contact Heather Edlund, Executive Director of Teaching and Learning, at edlundh@bsd405.org if you have any questions about COVID-19 testing in our schools, or visit the district COVID-19 Health and Safety webpage for more information about our current health and safety measures.
Thank you for your support and patience as we navigate this new process to promote safety and wellness in our schools.
Transportation Update
The BSD Transportation Department reminds you to please exercise patience during drop-off and pick-up times at our schools and bus routes. Families may be experiencing bus arrival and departure delays at various stops because of the increased volume of drivers to our schools. We are working through the increase in traffic while studying the traffic patterns and adjusting as needed. Your patience during this process is appreciated.
Remember to sign up for the Edulog Parent Portal, which is a bus tracking program to notify parents and students of bus delays.

STAFF APPRECIATION FUNDRAISING
|
|
Dear BHS Families,
Our Fall Teachers Appreciation Luncheon for the 2021-2022 school year hosted by PTSA will be held on October, 13th. Due to this ongoing pandemic, we decided not to accept the donation of home-made food from parents. No doubt our teachers would miss that so much. But no worries, we will order yummy Bento boxes instead, from the local restaurant, to make everyone less concerned. All parents are highly encouraged to Donate for this luncheon. We appreciate the teachers for their dedication to our students; we also appreciate all parents for their support to our dear teachers.
|
|
Thank you for your support as always.
Regards,
Staff Appreciation Lunch Co-chairs:

Please note that the district utilizes a monitoring system called Gaggle to screen student communications and files. This includes emails that are sent/received to school email addresses, chats in Microsoft Teams and files stored in OneDrive. The purpose of doing so is to help ensure a safer digital learning environment for each and every student, and to prevent violence and self-harm. As such, any student communication and/or file that discusses substance use, self-harm, threats, violence, obscenities, or words/phrases associated with harassment will be flagged for follow up. Please discuss this with your student(s), as we will be communicating this to them.

GRADING PRACTICES FOR 2021-2022
|
|
Changes to grades for the previous school year (2020-21), that were put into place in January of 2021, prioritized compassion for students and social, emotional, and mental health due to the impact of remote learning were for the 2020-21 year and will NOT continue for the 2021-22 school year. Specifically:
- Reporting NC (credit courses) and NE (non-credit courses) instead of F grades
- Reporting D grades as P grades
- Student/family option to report a P instead of a C or B grade
Teachers will continue to use grading practices that support students and provide flexibility to demonstrate learning and understanding of standards. Examples include the four evidence-based practices below that were implemented last school year and designed to result in grades that are more reflective of student learning. The implementation of these practices will continue for the 2021-22 school year:
- Classroom assessment is aligned to standards
- Students are provided with multiple opportunities to demonstrate learning
- Students can re-take and/or re-do summative assessments
Late work used to assess student learning is fully recognized to demonstrate proficiency

INTERDISCIPLINARY ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE INITIATIVE BY MIT GRADUATE STUDENTS
|
|
How can AI help us mitigate the climate crisis, trace the spread of illnesses, build self-driving cars, or identify bias in the criminal justice system? How exactly does Netflix know what your next favorite TV show is before you do? At the AI Scholars program students learn to apply an AI toolkit to tackle such real-world issues in domains they're passionate about– no prior programming experience necessary.
Through a project-based curriculum, students work under the guidance of an AI mentor from Stanford or MIT to explore the ethics and applications of artificial intelligence in healthcare, environment, law, music, astronomy and more! At the end of the course, students gain a sophisticated understanding of AI, experience applying AI to real-world datasets, and a final project they can use to enhance their college portfolio and careers.
"I have never attended a program that makes AI so accessible for high school students. Not only did I learn how to build various models, I also understood how they worked and how I could apply them to my own passions for history and political science. Inspirit AI has equipped me with the tools and mentors to pursue artificial intelligence further with a strong foundation.”
– Divya Ganesan, Stanford University, Castilleja High School alum
AI + Politics: Fake News Detection
Applications for our 2021 programs are open! The deadline to apply is September 30th.
Inspirit AI, 530 Lytton Avenue, Palo Alto, California 94301
