MAY
Older Americans Month AND Mental Health Month
At Senior Coastsiders, we aim to celebrate older adults every minute of every day by providing services and activities that keep you active, engaged, and aging successfully. This month, we have added some new classes and programs, have music and activities lined up at least once a week in our dining room, and have created new opportunities to help Coastside older adults stay healthy - physically and mentally. We invite you to try something new this month, maybe a meal at the center, or at It's Italia for the Senior's Dinner Club, a new class, or even volunteering!

We also encourage you to reflect on your own mental health this month. The past two years have taught us the importance of being aware of our feelings and emotions, and there are a number of great opportunities in May to delve a little deeper. The National Council on Aging will host its annual Older Adult Mental Health Awareness Day Symposium on May 16th. Registration is free and includes a full day of sessions on how to best meet the mental health needs of older adults. Register HERE. In addition, the San Mateo County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services will be offering virtual and in-person events during the entire month of May. Their listings can be found HERE.

AAUW Half Moon Bay Program
Monday, May 23rd 6:30-8:00PM
Half Moon Bay Library, 620 Correas Avenue

SPEAKER: Dana LandressAAUW American Fellowship Award Recipient

Dana Landress was awarded the American Fellowship for 2021-22.  As a Ph.D. candidate in history of medicine and public health at UC Berkeley, her project was titled Ill Fares the Land: Pellagra and Women’s Public-Health Work in the Jim Crow South. Dana is a historian of 20th century medicine and public health. Her research explores the diverse voices of female home-demonstration agents from across the American South who, without formal medical training, established community-health networks to eradicate pellagra, one of the South’s most devastating nutritional diseases in the 1920s. She is interested in the intersections between rural women’s health, agrarian economies, and medicine as it is learned and practiced outside of the clinic.
Please join us Monday, May 23rd in the Half Moon Bay Library to learn from one of the newest American Fellowship Award recipients and the new assistant professor in the Department of Medical History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s School of Medicine and Public Health, Dana Landress.

Supporting Senior Coastsiders
May is Coastside Gives month – an important time for the Coastside non-profit community. We are grateful to the Mavericks Community Foundation for continuing to serve as a catalyst for local giving by bringing awareness to the nonprofits in our community. The Mavericks Community Foundation facilitates fundraisers and conducts capacity-building seminars with the goal of improving the lives of those on the San Mateo County Coast. We are particularly grateful to our two matching donors for contributing $30,000 to kick start our 2022 Coastside Gives campaign. And thank you to all of you who have Senior Coastsiders on your Coastside Gives donation list this year.
Just for Fun!

A Note from the Executive Director
The services provided by Senior Coastsiders are age dependent and not income dependent. This means that if you are an older adult, we are here to serve you, no matter if you are on a low fixed income or fortunate enough to be financially independent. In thinking about the needs that people have, one of the most famous theories was developed by Abraham Maslow and published in 1943. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is usually shown as a pyramid in which the needs are divided into basic needs like food, water, warmth, rest, security and safety and growth needs that include a need to belong, to be loved, have a feeling of accomplishment, and achieve one’s full potential. Needs lower down in the hierarchy must be satisfied before individuals can attend to needs higher up.

The services provided by Senior Coastsiders meet every category of Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs:
  1. Physiological needs: Our transportation program provides opportunities for participants to come to the Center to eat healthy and delicious meals prepared in our kitchen and served in our dining room or home delivered. We also arrange transportation for our participants to go grocery shopping and access necessary healthcare. We provide classes and activities to keep our participants physically and mentally in shape.
  2. Safety needs: Our minor home repair program keeps the environments in which our seniors live as safe as possible. We have extensive emergency preparedness plans to ensure our participants will be safe in the event of an emergency. Our staff are trained to be aware of the potential of elder abuse and how to respond. We provide information and assistance, resources, and referrals to promote financial security and prevent fraud and abuse.
  3. Love and belonging needs: We provide opportunities for seniors to interact with others in a safe and welcoming environment during lunch, at regular classes and activities or special events.
  4. Esteem needs: We provide a supportive environment that promotes self-respect and self-esteem and contributes to emotional stability and well-being. Our volunteer program provides opportunities to engage in activities that provide purpose and meaning and a sense of fulfillment.
  5. Self-actualization needs: Our many classes and activities provide opportunities to be creative through writing, drawing, painting, and crafting; to learn new skills such as bridge; to learn about new topics through our special programing and presentations.
Wherever you are on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, the team at Senior Coastsiders looks forward to helping you get to the next level. Come for a visit and stay for lunch!
