PATIENCE PAYS OFF
Protecting Richardson Marsh has long been a high priority for the Preservation Trust and our frequent conservation partner, the San Juan County Conservation Land Bank. Working together with the Hoedemaker family, the two organizations made a big step toward achieving this goal with the completion of a pair of land transactions.

THE AWARD GOES TO ...
Preservation Trust staff and a flock of bluebird volunteers marked the end of the 2021 nesting season with a celebration at Red Mill Farm Preserve on San Juan Island. Part of the fun was awarding the traditional Golden Nestbox Award to Western Bluebird uber-volunteers Brian Clark and Rachel Merz.
MCARDLE BAY | AARON VLIET
A BOOSTER FOR SALMON
We received a nice shot in the arm in August that had nothing to do with COVID. Rather, it was a powerful booster in the form of final approval of a grant from the Washington Salmon Recovery Funding Board Program (aka the SRF Board). The grant will fund the purchase of a conservation easement to protect a strategic shoreline property on McArdle Bay, near the southeastern tip of Lopez Island.
EXPLORING INSECT LIFE BY THE POND
THREE SUMMER SATURDAYS
After more than a year of COVID-necessitated hiatus, we were delighted to welcome small groups for a series of educational and inspirational afternoon programs at the Marilyn and Fred Ellis Preserve this summer.

“Three Saturdays in August” highlighted explorations in entomology, discussions of the rich history of indigenous cultures in the San Juans, and a celebration of the iconic Western red cedar.
GOLDEN PAINTBRUSH AT SALISH SEEDS NURSERY | STAFF ARCHIVE
A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY
Golden paintbrush, a showy yellow wildflower, once thrived throughout coastal regions of the Pacific Northwest, including here in the San Juan Islands. By the 1990s, however, the plant faced extinction due to habitat loss. Thanks to restoration efforts, many mainland populations have bounced back—but in the San Juans, the golden beauty remains in precipitous decline. One ray of hope glows from the thriving plantings at the Salish Seeds Project nursery at Red Mill Farm Preserve.
LEAVE YOUR LEGACY IN THE SAN JUAN ISLANDS
The Gann Society is a group of individuals who have notified us that they have provided for the San Juan Preservation Trust in their estate plans.

Protect these islands for generations to come with a bequest to the San Juan Preservation Trust.
