Globalize DC will continue to share free global education, language learning, and study abroad opportunities with interested students, parents, and educators - and we're starting with these ten wonderful programs below. Teachers of Critical Languages Program
Program Dates: 2022-23 School Year
Application Deadline: October 22, 2021
The Teachers of Critical Languages Program (TCLP), funded by the US State Department, places fully funded EFL teachers from China, Egypt, and Morocco in US K-12 host schools for an academic year. The exchange teachers teach either Mandarin Chinese or Arabic, and serve as cultural resources in their host schools and communities. TCLP funds teachers’ salaries, healthcare, R/T airfare, training, professional development, and ongoing program support. Host schools provide mentorship and community support for TCLP teachers. TCLP is a GREAT way to start or grow an Arabic or Mandarin language program at your school.

Global Classrooms DC
Program Dates: SY2021-22
Global Classrooms DC (GCDC) is the flagship global education program of the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area (UNA-NCA). As a Model UN program, GCDC introduces students grades 5-12 to the work of the United Nations and international issues to prepare globally aware citizens. GCDC provides an engaging global education curriculum centered on debate-style mini Model UN simulations. The program hosts two Model UN Conferences during the school year, as well as engagements with UN agencies and international affairs experts. GCDC curriculum, materials, and programming will be available virtually for online teaching. The program is offered at no cost to DC classrooms.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR EDUCATORS

Pulitzer Center Teacher Fellowship
Program Dates: October 23, 2021 - May 21, 2022
Application Deadline: September 26, 2021
How can engagement with underreported global news stories support existing curricula, while also preparing students to engage critically and empathetically with the world? The Pulitzer Center is offering paid, virtual Fellowships during SY2021-22 to explore this question in a community of passionate educators, award-winning journalists, and the Pulitzer Center staff. The year’s theme is Journalism and Justice: Elevating Underreported Stories in the Classroom. Fellows will participate in workshops, develop and implement short units, and share their projects publicly through the Pulitzer Center’s online lesson library and virtual professional development programs. Upon completion, Fellows will earn a $1,200 stipend, digital badge, and 35 PLUs. This Fellowship is open to grade 4–12 classroom teachers.

Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Short-Term Program
Program Dates: Country dependent (March 2022 at the earliest)
Application Deadline: October 15, 2021
Ever dreamed of sharing your teaching expertise with peers in another country? Expert K–12 educators from the United States can travel to participating countries abroad to carry out short-term educational projects through this special US State Department-funded Fulbright program. Participants spend 2-6 weeks working in schools, teacher training colleges, government ministries, and/or educational nongovernmental organizations. The 2022 projects will take place in Colombia, MexicoIsraelthe Philippines, Spain, Uganda, and Vietnam. Candidates must be full-time K-12 teachers with at least 3 years of classroom experience.

ICU Global Youth Essay Competition 2021
Deadline: November 30, 2021
International Christian University (ICU) and Japan ICU Foundation invite youth from around the world to reflect and write about their views on how to make society better. The top prize is two round-trip tickets to Tokyo in summer 2022!!! Essays (maximum length 650 words) must focus on one of three announced topics: access to quality education; gender equality, or COVID-19. Applicants must be aged 14-18, must reside outside Japan, and not be enrolled in higher education.

LearnServe Fellows Program
Program Dates: September 2021-April 2022
Application Deadline: September 25, 2021 - Deadline Extended!
Calling all leaders, entrepreneurs, and changemakers! Apply to the LearnServe Fellows Program for the opportunity to join students from across the DC area and around the US for a dynamic introduction to social entrepreneurship! Design, pitch, and launch your own social action project to solve a social justice or environmental need in your community. First Session - September 30th!! Meet virtually once a week (Thursdays, 4:30-6:30 pm), and earn up to 70 service hours! 
Students in grades 9-12 from public, charter, and independent schools are invited to apply to this life-changing program.

Local Letters for Global Change: A Pulitzer Center Writing Contest
Deadline: November 13, 2021
Students are invited to make their voices heard this election season by writing a letter to an elected representative that summarizes a global issue, explains how it connects to their local community, and proposes a solution. Through this contest, students can practice persuasive writing, civic action, and global citizenship, all while exploring the underreported issues that matter to them. The contest is open to current K-12 students in the US or the world. Essays may be written in English and/or Spanish. High school, middle school, and elementary entries will be judged separately.

SPICE: Reischauer Scholars Program (RSP)
Program Dates: February-June 2022
Application Deadline: October 15, 2021
This is a highly prestigious online course for high school students offered by Stanford University’s Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education (SPICE). The RSP annually selects 25-30 exceptional students from across the US to engage in an intensive study of Japan, with a special focus on the US-Japan relationship. Students hear from experts in the field, and interact with Japanese high school students. Students must attend 10 “virtual classes,” complete weekly assignments, an independent research project, and community presentations. Those who complete the course will earn Stanford Continuing Studies Program (CSP) credit and a Certificate of Completion from SPICE, Stanford University. There is a $1000 tuition charge, but tuition waivers are available.

SPICE: Sejong Korean Scholars Program and China Scholars Program
Program Dates: February – June 2022
Korea Application Deadline: October 15, 2021
China Application Deadline: November 1, 2021
Stanford University’s SPICE Program also offers intensive online courses on China and Korea, open to high school students across the US. Designed as college-level introductions to East Asia, these courses allow serious students to engage in guided study of China or Korea directly with leading scholars, former diplomats, and other experts. Tuition is charged ($1000 for Korea; $1500 for China) but tuition waivers are available.
