Guest Minister: Rev. Michelle Ma
Worship Associate: Doug Facey
What does it mean to bring our full and authentic selves to a community, and what does it mean for that community to accept everyone the way they are? How do we make sure that there really is a seat at the table for everyone? Let's think about it and sing about it during the service, and then talk about it during Coffee Hour after.
Rev. Michelle Ma is a California native currently living in Northeast Ohio, where she is really getting into the Midwestern lifestyle of changing seasons, feeding birds, and making casseroles. She received her M.Div from the Pacific School of Religion in 2017, was welcomed into preliminary fellowship in 2019, and ordained as a Unitarian Universalist minister in 2020. While she certainly wishes she could be visiting you all in beautiful Burlington, she's excited to be able to deliver a message from afar. When she is not actively ministering, Rev. Michelle enjoys cooking, obsessing over her bird feeder, and playing Pokémon Go.

The Black Heritage of Burlington
| | Linda Cooper, Racial Justice Team
Your Racial Justice Team brings you a walking tour: The Black Heritage of Burlington
Saturday, September 19, 10:30 a.m.-noon: Take a walk along Archibald and Elmwood Streets with historian Elise Guyette to discover some of the African American history of the Old North End. As we walk and talk, we will encounter a former black church, a black-owned grocery store, the former home of black barbers who worked on Church Street, a hotel that was once in the "Green Book" and more. Meet at 78 Elmwood, at the south end of Elmwood Cemetery, at 10:30. We will end our walk at George and Elaine Little Park on the corner of North Winooski and Archibald. Elise Guyette is author of Discovering Black Vermont: African American Farmers in Hinesburg, 1790-1890. We know you will learn and enjoy this walk!
Cost: $10 per person. Maximum of 20 people on the tour with a minimum age of 14. Please wear a mask.

Please wear your mask.
Our group is centered around helping our UU members make an immediate difference for the environment, by providing ideas and tools to incorporate simple life changes to benefit the environment.

Early Fall Outdoor Vespers Services
In the midst of these challenging times, as summer turns to fall, let us safely come together, in person, to renew our hearts in community, in what has quickly become a beloved weekly ritual. Gather under the cover of our Memorial Garden canopy, for music and prayer, poetry and reflection, sharing and renewal. This small, physically-distanced, outdoor evening Vespers service will be led by Rev. David Ruffin and musical guests from the congregation.
Wednesday, September 23, 6:00-6:40 p.m. |
Our Money Our Happy Hour | | Kameron McConnell, Treasurer
Thursday, September 24, 5:30-6:30 p.m. via Zoom
Pop a top, grab your goblet, pour a cuppa! What questions and concerns do you have about the financial health of our congregation? With no presentation planned, this is an hour of Q&A with your Director of Operations & Finance, and Treasurer. We'll start with a brief round of introductions and an icebreaker, so in addition to your questions, we hope you'll come ready to tell us about your first paid job.
Click here for the Zoom link, or call 1-646-558-8656 to join by phone. Meeting ID: 838 9017 1890. |
Children's Garden Event
| |
Erika Reif, Director of Lifespan Faith Development
Sunday, September 27, 10-11 a.m.
Fall's relative warmth is fleeting, so come take advantage of this opportunity to join in fellowship with other FUUSB families for an interactive story experience under the canopy in the Memorial Garden. We are blessed to have veteran theatre educator Margo Whitcomb on our staff, who has designed a program geared to PreK and Elementary-aged children centered on our stewardship of water and the interdependence of all living things. Opportunities for active play and artistic expression will sandwich our group telling of "We Are the Water Protectors" by Carole Lindstrom.
Masks are required. Limited to 20 participants.
Registration in advance would be very helpful but we will accommodate same-day sign-ups as space allows. Please review and affirm our Covid Safety checklist on the day of the event.

Autumn Service Auction and Wreath Sale
| | Dan House, Board President
The Auction is coming. It may look a little different this year, but last year's auction was so good at bringing our community together, we knew we wanted to find a way to make it happen again. Please start thinking of creative items you would enjoy sharing with members of the FUUSB. There will be categories for Food (pies, cookies, dinners delivered), services (lawn care, knife sharpening, music lessons), social gatherings that can be done safely (sledding, outdoor picnics, small concerts), baskets, vacations, and physical, artistic or creative items. If it doesn't fit into one of those categories, contact us and we'll figure out where it can go.
We will be seeking donations of items to be auctioned by the end of October. The bidding will be online for 2 weeks in November (plenty of time to give your auction winnings as holiday gifts).
The annual Holiday Wreath Sale will also be rolled into the Auction. The wreaths will be available for pick-up or delivery in early December and will have a fixed price rather than bidding.
For safety reasons, we will not be gathering in person for the auction. Also, the annual holiday bazaar will not happen this year.
Keep a lookout for more information. And if you have questions or wonder about a potential donation, send us an email:
Sarah Forbes (for questions about the wreaths):

UU Member Exhibit at Rokeby Museum
Aileen Chutter
Pam MacPherson and I recently spent two hours viewing a beautiful exhibit at the Rokeby Museum titled Mending Fences: New Works by Carol MacDonald, a FUUSB member. She competed with applicants from all over the US to design this exhibit. She was given a collection of clothing, broken pottery, and other objects that needed mending, and repaired them with red thread, or red epoxy and paint. The art of her repairs and words describing them is inspiring. The exhibit is in a building full of light and beautifully spaced. If you like art and want to be inspired, Pam and I urge you to visit the Rokeby. The exhibit ends on October 25.
Click here for a Seven Days article about the exhibit.
