THE APOSTLE PAUL – LESSON 56
THE JOURNEY TO ROME – PART 10
UNDER HOUSE ARREST IN ROME
Paul and his fellow travelers finally arrive in Rome. The centurion delivered all the other prisoners to the captain of the guard to be put in prison, but not Paul. (Acts 28:16-31.)
Paul and his party were allowed to rent their own house. A guard was posted to keep watch over him in this house arrest. We know Aristarcus and Luke were with him as they journeyed the entire trip with him. We know also that Tychicus, Timothy, John Mark, Jesus Justus, Epaphras, and Demas abode with him in Rome. He had plenty of visitors also from the brethren in and around Rome. He had the favor of liberty that no other “prisoner” was given.
After three days, Paul called together the chief leaders of the Jews. He told them why he had been bound and sent to Rome. They knew this “sect” of Followers of the Way was spoken ill against almost everywhere, but they desired to hear Paul’s thoughts about it.
They appointed a day to hear him. Many came to his house. Paul expounded the gospel to them the whole day long. Some believed and some did not. The Jews departed at the end of that day reasoning things out among themselves.
Paul remained under house arrest in Rome for over two years (61-64 A.D.) preaching the Kingdom of God and teaching the new believers.
It was during these 2-1/2 years in prison, that he wrote the epistles to the Colossians, Ephesians, and Philippians. It was a busy and proficient period of time.

FAITH OR WORKS
The Apostle Paul, when he was known as Saul, was very zealous about tracking down Christians and either destroying their homes or killing them. He was a Pharisee, a legalist that went by the letter of the law. He thought he was doing these works for God, to get rid of this heretical “cult” but when he met Jesus on the Road to Damascus everything changed. He was confronted with his “works” and was found guilty. Jesus said in modern English, “How does it feel to get poked with a stick like you gave it out?” He was given a taste of his own medicine so to speak.
After he spent three years on the back side of the desert studying scripture and communing with Holy Spirit. There he learned about faith. There he learned that the “just” must live by faith, and not by works. He learned that works are the result of our faith, but works do not justify or make us more acceptable to God.
The biggest problem Paul had in his ministry was with people that were like he once was. He would preach truth about faith, but they were bound up in legalism that they had been taught from childhood. These legalistic Jewish leaders tried to force newly converted gentile Christians to be circumcised and do other works of the law that they deemed necessary to be saved.
In the Book of Galatians Paul called these gentile Christians “foolish” for going “backwards.” They had started out in the Spirit, but they succumbed to the legalistic views of these Jews. The whole letter of Galatians was to correct that wrong view. He showed them that Abraham was not justified by works, but rather by faith. Works follow faith. Faith produces good works, but works will never save anyone.
Are you bound up in the thought that if you are just good enough that God will love you? That is a works doctrine, not faith. None of us will ever be good enough. We have to accept the truth that Jesus brings salvation to us by faith in his “works” that he alone could do, through his crucifixion and resurrection. These alone provide the way to eternal life. Once we are free of this works’ legalism, we rest in the fact that God loves us. It takes faith to believe this, but it is the only way to rest entirely on what Jesus did, and not what we can do to get saved, or stay saved!
Remember works (things we do for God’s kingdom) come after salvation, but do not provide salvation.

You would ask is this the time, and I would say that time is in my hands. I am preparing and I am implementing what will come to my earth soon. For nation will rise against nation, and there shall be floods, and earthquakes, there shall be pestilence and violence like you have never seen before. I am bringing the shaking and the fires to my earth, and I will see to it that all things are purified. There is a great shaking going on, have I not told you that? Why would you be surprised to see these things happening? I am in the shaking saith the Lord, and I will see things shaken until they cannot be shaken anymore. You shall see things come to dust that stood tall, and you shall see things become tall that many took for dust. You will see these things with your eyes, and my word shall be carried out. I am preparing and I am in the times. I shall say it again, I am preparing and I am in the times. These events are being played out on my schedule, and not on man’s time frame. You are seeing things as prophesied of old, and yes, they shall surely come to pass before that great and terrible day of the Lord. Things are changing rapidly, and they shall surely speed up saith the Lord, you will see these things change, and you will tell others of the magnitude of my power, for nothing can stop the shaking, for I have declared it, and I have spoken, and it shall surely come to pass. Your nation has crossed over the threshold of its destiny, and you shall see it fall, and then from the dust there will be a rising, and there are many that will stay the course, but there are many who have called me Lord that shall perish. Those that are of my heart desire to change, and they are the ones that shall see these things through, just as the days where the three went into the fiery furnace and received no smoke or burning on them, the same thing shall happen to those of my heart. They shall be in the fire but not be burned. They shall not smell of smoke. But these three spent time with me, and did not compromise. They did not love their lives unto death. Surely they fought the fight of the flesh, but they did not yield to it. They went beyond the flesh, and walked in the spirit with me, and I delivered them. I would say to you now, my children, and cast aside every weight so you can walk with me in the spirit. Let go of every stronghold that would hold you back. Do not despise those that are walking in the spirit. Yearn for the things of the spirit my children; yearn for them as a soul longs for the love of God. Seek after me and I will be there to see you through. Change is here saith the Lord. Brace yourself for it, and yield to my Spirit as He leads you in the path of righteousness saith the Lord.

Always remember...Those other folks have not fought your battle; Nor have they stood beside you on this battlefield you’ve been on. Therefore, they sure can’t understand your fight. So, do yourself a favor and stop trying to explain everything to them. Just know that in the very heat of the battle...As the enemy comes in like a flood (and he will at times) that it’s then when God Himself will be there for you to raise up a standard against it. So you can rest in His peace while knowing that God's got you...And He’s got the battle plan laid out ahead for you. Just continue to keep a sweet spirit, don’t try to explain or to retaliate; And just trust God through it all.
