KICKOFF HIGHLIGHTS
Heating Help includes Fuel Assistance and Energy Efficiency Programs. Fuel Assistance is a partnership between the federal government (Low Income Energy Assistance program, LIHEAP) and the state government.
"Keeping warm is a basic human need. In order to maintain public health, we need to make sure that people have adequate home heating..." --Senator Bruce Tarr
The program has served nearly 160,000 households including 49% elderly, 34% disabled, 35% children and 41% with earned income.
Eligibility is based on last four weeks of gross income and number in the household.
"What I don't want to see is someone who actually makes it to that point to pay for own rent or own their own home and then not be able to buy their prescription drugs, not be able to buy food..." --Representative Ann-Margaret Ferrante.
Program information including eligibility and agency lookup are available at www.heatinghelpma.org.
Energy efficiency programs include weatherization, appliance replacement and instant savings measures, and heating system repair and replacements.
"What do you have to lose to apply? If you think you are going to be turned down, there could be other programs for you. They just don't give you fuel, they give you fuel for your soul too." --Gloucester Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken
