Honoring Memorial Day

Because May is the month in which we recognize Memorial Day, this month's newsletter offers specific content on death and dying. Of particular interest on the topic is the article below called Acceptance of Death and Reclaiming Traditional Wisdom, and a beautiful video called The Life of Death, which we have published here before.

In keeping with that theme, we are pleased to announce our new affiliation with the Final Exit Network (FEN). This organization provides education and resources to support the belief that any competent person unbearably suffering an intractable medical condition has the option to die legally and peacefully.

In other news, we are also very excited to be affiliated with the upcoming Conference on Religious Trauma, which takes place (online) May 12 - 16.

Finally, as I'm sure you all know by now, our 11th annual Afterlife Conference is just eight weeks away. Please take a moment to scroll through the information below for details on our incredible lineup of speakers and the CE credits available for nurses, social workers, psychologists and more.

More Great Sources for NDE and Afterlife Research
Last month we shared some resources and websites with excellent research on accounts of near-death experience, this month we'd like to introduce you to another great repository of information... The Near Death Experience Research Foundation (NDERF). Find them HERE.
An Inclusive, Interfaith Approach to
The National Day of Prayer
The National Day of Prayer became a federal statute back in 1952, promoted by conservative evangelist Billy Graham. It has traditionally been perceived and presented as a Christian event, and has generally not been inclusive of other religions or spiritual perspectives.

This year, on May 6, the students and faculty of The Graduate Theological Union (GTU) are presenting an interfaith, inter-spiritual, multi-cultural National Day of Prayer event. Please join us ONLINE for our special ceremony, which will incorporate prayers, invocations and practices from a vast spectrum of spiritual traditions, including Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Celtic Pagan, Native American and Buddhist.
May 6, 2021 - 11:30 am Pacific/ 2:30 pm Eastern

All attendees are asked to bring a 3-4-foot piece of yarn or ribbon for an experiential ceremony.

Acceptance of Death
and Reclaiming Traditional Wisdom
by Gary Wederspahn
"When I was born in 1940, nearly all people in the U.S. died at home. Dying—like being born—was generally a family, community, and religious event, not a medical one. Because people were directly and personally involved in caring for dying relatives, death was considered a natural thing and not a forbidden subject.

Three decades later, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, in her landmark book, On Death and Dyingwarned that we had become a “society in which death is viewed as a taboo, discussion of it regarded as morbid and children are excluded with the presumption and pretext that it would be ‘too much’ for them. We use euphemisms and we make the dead look as if they are 'asleep.'” READ MORE...
The Life of Death
One of the most beautiful statements about death that we've ever seen. We've shared it here before, but for those of you who might have missed it, we hope you will love it as much as we do.
