Absurd is defined as "utterly or obviously senseless, illogical, or untrue; contrary to all reason or common sense; laughably foolish or false". The problem becomes when something that is considered absurd today becomes acceptable behavior tomorrow. If you have been in this world for many years, it is easy to see how things that our parents considered absurd are accepted practices today.
An old leadership training saying is: "The 6th time you hear something without contradiction, you will begin to believe it as fact." Today, it seems, that many in powerful positions are trying to tell us things they firmly believe without allowing us to hear alternative points of view. When this is done through our primary sources of information, it is called "Censorship". It is not eliminating disinformation.
Atrocities happen when certain groups of people, religions, or countries are held up as evil or any other number of names that make people believe they should be dealt with harshly or, even, eliminated.
I am not in favor of shutting anyone up unless it is the equivalent of: "Yelling Fire in a crowded theater". I am in favor of giving everyone a fair voice, a voice without the fear of retaliation and reprisal. I am in favor of the open discussing and sharing of ideas. With fair and open discussion, the good ideas will survive and the bad ones fade away.
