A Word from Scott

This Sunday will be my one-month mark as pastor of Northside Drive Baptist Church. It has been such a rich time of meeting folks and hearing stories. And it will continue!

It is my hope to have a time to sit down with each of you to listen to stories and to hear your hopes and dreams about our future together. We can meet over beer, coffee or lunch. We can meet at your place or at mine, or you can come by my office here at church. Feel free to reach out to me or expect my call.

In my time here, I have learned that Northside Drive is a loving and caring community with a beautiful tradition of worship and study and much to offer to neighbors and to the world.

This Sunday we will celebrate communion together. Communion is our connection with God and with one another. It is the site where the human meets the divine, where the mundane meets the profound, where we are grounded in the deep mysteries of our faith. It is where we share our Eastertide proclamation, “I have seen the Lord!”

A Word of Gratitude to Don Janney

A message from Jack Guynn, chair of the Personnel Committee:

Longtime NDBC member Don Janney will wrap up his role as interim Operations Administrator on April 30, a position in which he has served since October 2021.

Late last summer the Personnel Committee realized that the church would be without pastoral leadership from fall until the the Pastor Search Committee had concluded its work, so we set about identifying interim church leadership. We recruited Greg DeLoach and Matt DuVall to fill the ministerial roles, but there was no one to work with non-ministerial staff in the interim.

We concluded that the ideal choice would be one of our own, Don Janney. We were reluctant to even approach Don about this special role, because he had already given the church decades as one of our most faithful lay leaders. However, the committee asked him to take on three months overseeing the church’s administrative functions. Without hesitation, Don replied that he would accept the role, and in fact he served for seven months.

Don has been ideal for this position. He knows the church inside and out. His past work with the Facilities Committee has left him very familiar with the church’s aging infrastructure, and he has helped with various personnel and administrative issues over the years.

Don has spent considerable time in person at the church each week. Since Scott Hovey was called to our church, he has been instrumental in helping Scott learn about the church, its programs, and its members. The staff has commented often on how important it has been to have Don in his role and what a pleasure he always is to work with.

There are many church lay leaders who have stepped up during the period of pastoral leadership change, and we are grateful to each of you. Recognition is owed to all, but none more than Don Janney. Please join me in thanking Don for the gift of his talents in service to Northside Drive Baptist Church.

This Sunday in Art & Soul

This Sunday, Art & Soul will continue its study of Uppity Women of the Bible: Esther, a stimulating series of video lectures given by Dr. Lisa Wolfe, professor of religion and chair of the Department of Hebrew Bible at Oklahoma City University.

This week's lesson is "Setting the Stage," and Donette Lee will facilitate our discussion.

You can watch this week's video by clicking here, and we hope you will join us at 9 a.m. this Sunday at the Zoom link below:

Our Easter and Holy Week Music

I want to express my thanks to the members of the NDBC Sanctuary Choir and our organist Melinda Clark for their excellent work on the music during our Holy Week and Easter services.

I also want to thank Steve Sheeley, Joel Stouffer, and Kurt Thomas for sharing their musical gifts during the Good Friday Service.

It is a joy and a privilege to work with talented and dedicated musicians.

Musically yours,

Keith Walker

Updated Mask Policy

Following discussion and subsequent recommendations by our Covid Protocols Task Force and the Church Council, NDBC has modified its policy on the wearing of masks during worship services.

Wearing masks to worship is now encouraged, but not required. For the present, social distancing in the pews and the request for registration before attending worship will remain. We will continue to monitor local conditions and CDC recommendations to determine any further changes to our policy.
