July 15, 2021

Greetings -

Thanks very much for your interest in Bay Area bluegrass and old time music events -- and for sending me updates and corrections. Please visit the Bluegrass Signal web site for the latest listings, playlists, and a number of items and articles of interest to bluegrass and old time music fans.

For the third consecutive year, I’ve been nominated for the International Bluegrass Music Association’s “Broadcaster Of the Year.” This is, indeed, a true honor, one that I’m proud to share with other Bluegrass Signal producer/hosts Allegra Thompson, Leah Wollenberg, Todd Gracyk, Jose Segue, Sully Roddy, and Ryan Breen. The irony of this selection in light of the news presented below is inescapable.

Congratulations also to Ellen Silva for her nomination as IBMA’s “Graphic Designer Of the Year,” in part for the outstanding work she did on Turn Your Radio On, the 2-CD set of recordings done live at KALW that was offered to listeners during the Spring Membership Campaign.

Additional congratulations to other California nominees: the CBA Jam-a-Thon (Event of the Year); Porch Pride (Event of the Year); Kara Kundert (Momentum Industry Involvement); Daisy Caire (Moment Instrumentalist of the Year); Miles Quale (Moment Instrumentalist of the Year); Teo Quale (Moment Instrumentalist of the Year); and Crying Uncle Bluegrass Band (Momentum Band of the Year).

A complete list of IBMA Industry and Momentum Award nominees is HERE

Be well -

I apologize for the length of these comments, but trust you are interested in hearing about changes to KALW programming.

Some of it is positive: the station is not only significantly increasing the number of music programs offered but also has made sure that the new shows are characterized by much-needed diversity, in terms of both the staffing and content. All of us involved in KALW — as listeners, programmers, and supporters — applaud the new and exciting directions for the station.

However, at the same time and for no plausible reasons, KALW management has reduced the times of the current local music shows broadcast on Saturdays from 9 hours each week to 5 hours.

Folk Music & Beyond, A Patchwork Quilt, and Tangents, as well as Bluegrass Signal, have been mainstays in KALW’s schedule for many years. I’m proud to be part of this award-winning group of programs, programs that are characterized by ongoing excellence, commitment to the principles of “local public radio,” and significance sources of financial support by listeners like you who appreciate their inclusion in KALW’s schedule.

I joined the producer/hosts of these programs, along with the station’s other local music programmers, to present KALW management with scheduling possibilities that accommodated the program additions without affecting the current offerings. These possibilities were not given serious consideration by KALW management. Rather, KALW management has decided to maintain syndicated programming that is duplicated on other Bay Area public radio and/or available elsewhere on demand — instead of prioritizing programming that is at the heart of local public radio.

Tangents producer/host Dore Stein recently articulated four key aspects of public radio music programs:

• local origination

• high quality

• listener support

• alignment with station values

KALW’s current Saturday music programs more than meet this criteria. All are important components of the Bay Area music scenes that they reflect each week on the radio and all have contributed to KALW in numerous and meaningful ways. To be targeted for airtime reduction with no explanation is not only disparaging to the producer/hosts but also insulting to you loyal listeners and supporters.

Starting on July 24th, these are the new broadcast times for KALW's long-running Saturday local music programs:

• 3-4 pm: Folk Music & Beyond

• 4-5 pm: A Patchwork Quilt

• 5-6 pm: Bluegrass Signal

• 10 pm-midnight: Tangents

NOTE: Africa Mix and Fog City Blues move to Saturdays, maintaining their existing 2-hour lengths, broadcast from 6-10 pm.

Starting on July 19th, THESE are the new Monday-Friday, 8 pm - midnight music shows.

If you have any comments, concerns, or reaction to these changes, you can send them to feedback@kalw.org; please send copies of your comments to me at bgsignal@comcast.net and to the following members of the San Francisco Board of Education (which holds the license to KALW):

President Gabriela Lopez <gabrielalopez@sfusd.edu>

Vice President Faauuga Moliga <faauugamoliga@sfusd.edu>

Commissioner Matt Alexander <mattalexander@sfusd.edu>

Commissioner Alison Collins <alisonmcollins@sfusd.edu>

Commissioner Jenny Lam <jennylam@sfusd.edu>

Commissioner Mark Sanchez <marksanchez@sfusd.edu>

Commissioner Kevine Boggess <kevineboggess@sfusd.edu>

You are also encouraged to submit your thoughts in the KALW Listener Survey.

Thank you very much for your support of Bluegrass Signal and KALW’s other Saturday music programs. That support is crucial to maintaining — and even expanding — KALW’s local music programming that has proven successful and popular among listeners like you.

Until Saturday -

Peter
