At Caltrain, Every Day is Earth Day
With the passing of another Earth Day, I am reminded of the substantial role that Caltrain has in the fight against climate change. Providing efficient mass transit that gets thousands of cars off the road is vitally necessary to managing California’s carbon footprint, and while we at Caltrain are proud of our contributions towards that goal, a great deal of work remains.

This month, Caltrain published its 2021 Sustainability Report, which outlines the environmental progress we’ve made in the last two years – including reducing the agency’s net GHG emissions by 11 percent. In California, personal vehicles generate the largest amount of greenhouse gasses. Every time you choose public transportation instead of using a car, you are taking a stand and setting an example for others.

Our responsibility is to continue improving Caltrain service - by electrifying the corridor, enhancing stations, or even redesigning our website - because that’s what will encourage increased use of transit. Looking ahead to our electrified future, we will soon be able to offer an even greener option for traveling through the Peninsula, one that communities will be able to enjoy the benefits of for decades to come.
Ribbon Cutting for New South San Francisco Station
Caltrain in partnership with federal, state, and local elected officials cut the ribbon on the new and improved South San Francisco Station on April 8. Construction on the $96.6 million project began in 2017, with funding from the San Mateo County Transportation Authority, City of South San Francisco, and Federal Transit Administration. The station is now fully accessible with a center-boarding platform, allowing riders to seamlessly move between platforms, improving the east-west connection connecting downtown South San Francisco to the job center of Oyster Point.

Testing of Electric Trains at CEMOF
Testing of the new electric train at the Caltrain Central Equipment and Maintenance Facility has begun. The new trains will go through different testing phases, from static to simulated, and eventually bigger system-wide testing that will ensure that all components of Caltrain Electrification function seamlessly together.

New Mobile-Friendly Website
Caltrain debuted a newly redesigned website in April, with trip planning, a live map of the train’s location, and interactive station maps. The new site puts riders front and center, so they can easily access the most vital information for their commutes. Additionally, the new website is mobile first with a sleek, modern look in keeping with Caltrain’s transition to modern electrified service.

Schedule Change Starts May 2
From Monday, May 2 to Friday, May 20, Caltrain will temporarily reduce its service levels down to 88 trains per day to accommodate Caltrain Electrification work in San Mateo and Burlingame. Caltrain will still be running three trains per hour in each direction between the hours of 5:30 - 9 a.m. and 3:30 - 7 p.m. Baby Bullet service will be suspended during this period of construction and trains will be single-tracking through Broadway, Burlingame, San Mateo, Hayward Park and Hillsdale stations during this period.

Caltrain Releases 2021 Sustainability Report
Caltrain released its 2021 Sustainability Report this month, outlining the environmental progress it has made in the last two years. Even as the agency struggled with the effects of COVID-19, more gains were made demonstrating the importance of transit in the fight against climate change. Even despite lower ridership in the last two years, Caltrain reduced the agency’s net GHG emissions by 11%, air pollution generation by 10% and facility energy use is down 6%.

Caltrain Recognizes Arab American Heritage Month
The Caltrain Board of Directors voted to recognize Arab American Heritage Month at their April Board meeting. Caltrain recognizes that it serves a diverse population of riders that have a range of experiences with bias, discrimination, and unequal outcomes or treatment in their lives. Caltrain believes every person has the freedom to feel valued and respected, condemns racism in rhetoric or action and works to ensure that everyone is welcome onboard.
