Dear PARA Member,

On November 7, 2017 New York State (NYS) voters will be asked to decide whether or not they agree to convene a NYS Constitutional Convention (ConCon). This referendum appears automatically every 20 years, per the NYS Constitution. Why is this a concern for PARA retirees and current employees who are vested or plan to be?

There is no set agenda for a ConCon; the delegates can recommend changes to any provisions in the existing NYS Constitution. That includes the loss of protection from reductions to our NYS earned pensions and benefits. There are arguments for holding a ConCon as well, but PARA believes that the history of outcomes and taxpayer cost are not worth the risk to our earned pensions and benefits. The great majority of NYS voters have no idea what a ConCon is, let alone that a referendum to hold a convention will be on the state-wide ballot on November 7, 2017. Your PARA Board has been tracking this issue for a long time, and now that Election Day is some 10 weeks away, we will be sending you lots of updates via email and post. Our website has the latest information about the NYS ConCon , and we ask you to check it often.
