September is Kinship Month
September is Kinship month. We want to take this opportunity to thank all our members and anyone out there raising a relative child. We admire your love, hard work and dedication to helping your child become resilient. In your honor, Foster Kinship will be hosting a Kinship Celebration on Tuesday, September 11th at 6:00 pm.

Meet the team of Foster Kinship. Advocates work hard to connect Kinship Families with community referrals and resources.

Many times families are not aware that they could be eligible for services, these are are called Informal families. Informal families do not have an ope case with the Department of Family Services. Families who are considered Informal may have already signed Guardianship which means they would not be eligible for any licensing training or foster care reimbursement. An example of an available resource is Child Only TANF which is cash assistance for blood related family members who are raising a relative child. Clients are connected with the community through referrals for clothing, behavioral agencies, diapers, WIC and much more. This is part of the Foster Kinship Navigator program. Families call Foster Kinship to do a brief intake with a Family Advocate to see if they qualify.

Foster Kinship also works with families with formal cases, this means they have an active/open case with the Department of Family Services. These families attend classes for 5 weeks to work toward a license. Relative caregivers only have to complete 15 hours of class training in addition to other requirements such as CPR/First AID/AED training and Car Seat Safety. Foster Kinship offers these classes as well as a resource center to assist the caregiver through the licensing process. While it can be financially stressful during the licensing process, Foster Kinship provides Navigator Services which means they will connect caregivers with diapers, formula, and other resources available in the community. Child Only TANF might be an option only until they obtain their license.
.
Foster Kinship is so committed to families that a monthly support group is held every second Tuesday of the month and includes dinner and childcare. For more information please click below.

Managing Behaviors

Are you struggling with managing behaviors? Have you tried a behavior chart. Rewarding a child for good behavior may help them stay more on top of their homework and chores.

My experience has been that it has helped my son learn that hard work pays off. Though not all days are easy, behavior charts are a great tool to put in place.

There are inexpensive charts available on Amazon or you could get creative and make your own.
