Knight Chair Steve Wolgast published a research article in Transactions of the Burgon Society. Wolgast and Dr. Michael Everett of Michigan State University looked at attitudes of faculty at land-grant institutions toward cap and gown attire at commencement. The article, “‘Outdated and Anachronistic, But That’s Part of the Fun:’ Faculty Attitudes and Beliefs Regarding Academic Dress at a Second Land Grant University,” followed Everett’s work at MSU in 2018 and published last year.
Wolgast’s J691: Community Journalism class had a Zoom discussion about mail-in voting with two staffers in the Kansas Secretary of State’s office. Clay Barker, the deputy general counsel (a KU Law alumnus), and Katie Koupal, deputy assistant secretary of state (a KU School of Public Affairs alumna), explained voting procedures in Kansas as students prepared to interview all 105 county election clerks across the state.
Gerri Berendzen’s presentation on editing, “Editing Your Own Work,” has been accepted as a session in the 2020 College Media Association/Associated Collegiate Press fall virtual conference. Berendzen will present on Oct. 23. The convention’s schedule is being finalized. Students or others who are interested can find information about the conference here.
Associate Professor Genelle Belmas attended a virtual seminar entitled “Media and the Law: From Ferguson to George Floyd to Portland: Protesters, Police and the Journalists in the Middle” last week. Panelists included journalists, media attorneys and advocacy group leaders. Discussions centered on the recent protests prompted by the deaths of Floyd and other people of color at the hands of police, how reporters can safely cover those protests, and the availability and efficiency of legal remedies and support when journalists are arrested or detained.
Matt Tidwell, assistant dean for graduate and professional studies, was the keynote speaker at the Kansas Association of Health Care Communicators 2020 Spring Conference on Sept. 10. His topic was “Crisis communications in the digital age.”
Doctoral student Muhammad Ittefaq’s commentary article titled “COVID-19 and Social-Politics of Medical Misinformation on Social Media in Pakistan” was recently accepted to Media Asia journal. This is the result of Ittefaq’s collaborative project with researchers from Arizona State University and University of Education, Pakistan.

ACES scholarships: Applications are now being accepted for scholarships through the ACES Education Fund, which awards six scholarships annually. ACES: The Society for Editing is the nation’s leading organization of editing professionals, educators and students. Learn more and apply here.
The Reynolds Journalism Institute’s 2020-21 Student Innovation Competition at the Missouri School of Journalism invites college students to participate by tackling engagement with a news organization. A student or student team will partner with a news organization to devise an engagement idea innovative to that organization. Applications detailing the team’s idea are due by Oct. 31. The chosen finalist teams will implement their idea at the partner news organization for three months before presenting the results on Feb. 26, 2021, in front of judges and the public on Zoom. First-place prize is $10,000. More details here.
The NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists is inviting students to attend its virtual convention Oct. 23-25. The convention is free to all student members of NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists, however students who are not currently members may attend for only $25. The School of Journalism will pay the registration fee for students who want to attend; email jschool@ku.edu. Students who are not already members will receive a complimentary one-year membership to the association when they sign up for the convention. Student registration is available here.

William Allen White documentary on TV |
Watch “William Allen White: What’s the Matter with Kansas,” a documentary sponsored by the William Allen White Foundation and directed by Academy Award-winning KU Professor Kevin Willmott, at 8 tonight on KTWU. The film premiered on campus in 2018 during the school’s celebration of the 150th birth year of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Emporia Gazette editor. Viewers also may purchase a DVD at the KU Bookstore.

Kansan turns 116: On Sept. 17, the KU Memorial Union is commemorating the 100th anniversary of the 1920 mascot and the 116th anniversary of the first edition of the University Daily Kansan. Kansan editor and J-School student Nicole Asbury will speak. The 2:30 p.m. event also will include the debut of a new illustrated book, "Jayhawk Birthday: A Nesting Story,” which reveals how the 1920 Jayhawk found a home at KU. Attendees must RSVP or they may join virtually. Learn more here.
