We’re all excited about the snow. But before you hop in the car and head to the mountains, consider the impact traffic has on Lake Tahoe.
Long lines of cars on Tahoe’s roads pose a serious problem for the Lake's clarity. Snow chains, traction materials and plows crush pavement into fine dust and debris. When the snow melts or it rains, that fine sediment pollution moves downhill and ends up in the Lake.
Help combat pollution by planning your Tahoe trip to include alternative transportation.
Our winter transportation page has COVID-responsible options for how you can get to and around Tahoe, enjoy the snow, and Keep Tahoe Blue while you’re at it.

Prevent Plastic Sled Pollution
Every year, flimsy plastic sleds create a lot of litter in Tahoe. Last winter, Tahoe made national news after 2,000 pounds of trash was removed from the sled hill at Spooner Summit. Let’s learn from the past, not repeat it.
If you plan on sledding this winter, invest in a sturdier sled, sleigh or toboggan. Make sure you pack out everything you packed in to the sled hill. Leave Tahoe better than you found it.

UPDATE: Aquatic Weeds in the Tahoe Keys
The aquatic weeds in the Keys' lagoons are now spreading into Lake Tahoe itself, as shown in the picture above. To Keep Tahoe Blue, we must address the source of the problem now. The League's work to identify a long-term solution to the problem in the Keys continues.
On November 19 at 9:00 am, the Lahontan Water Quality Control Board will hold an informational public workshop on the proposal to test different methods to control the Keys' weeds. The public is invited to participate and provide comments. We encourage you to tune in and voice your opinion.
- Current tools are not sufficient to treat a problem as big and complex as in the Keys. We need to test innovative treatments to find a long-term solution.
- The proposed TEST has undergone a rigorous scientific review to ensure it is safe for the Lake and the people who enjoy it.
- Most importantly, if we continue to rely on the same treatment methods currently in use, the problem will get worse.

Advancing restoration of the Basin's ecosystem is crucial to making Tahoe resilient to climate change.
We were able to sneak in two more ecosystem restoration events before the recent winter weather arrived. Here's a recap.
In collaboration with the City of South Lake Tahoe and the California Tahoe Conservancy, our staff and volunteers helped restore the creek and stormwater channel near Whole Foods Market in South Lake Tahoe. Healthy, functioning creeks, streams and wetlands keep pollutants from flowing into the Lake. Check out our #TahoeBlueGooder crew in action.

Just before Halloween, a team of volunteers continued restoration work at Johnson Meadow, adding to the progress made at our last three Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day events. Our hard-working volunteers removed 176 t-posts from old barbed wire fencing, and 246 conifers encroaching on sensitive meadow habitat.
